I am trying to figure out if this is a shelac finish
on this stock and also if Remington would use shelac
from the factory originally.

Might try putting a lil bit of ipa on it, if the finish softens then its shelac.

My memory is getting a little soft, but I think John Glyde co-wrote a book on remington rimfires and as far as I know, still posts on Rimfire Central. He might be the guy to ask. Could be wrong on the name?

Looks to be a factory Finnish no sanding scratches no rounded edges as for what it is not sure why that matters other than curiosity

I want to ''lightly'' refinish it and retain the 120 year old look , it was suggested
to wet 'n dry it then shelac.

Personally I'd leave it as is. Looks good to me....
