I've been taking a lot of abuse from Rick for not getting some trigger time on the rifle he built for me over a year ago. Well here is the result of some test loads with Berger 210s. Now to tinker with seating depths and maybe try another powder.

First two loads I tried. Top is 71.1gr of RL22 loaded to 3.572". Brass was new WW brass and Federal GM215M primers. 2855 FPS average. Bottom load is 71.4gr of IMR 7828 in the same brass and primer. 2896 FPS average.

This was the last load I tried. I almost didn't load it because I thought 4350 would be too fast. I still think it is a bit fast, but the results don't lie. 64.4gr of IMR4350 and Federal GM215Ms. 2792 FPS average.

29" RKS 1-10" barrel
Cerakoted action and barrel
Nightforce +20 base and Lightweight rings
Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x TMR
3.8" Magazine and follower
I kept the stock as it was too pretty to turn into firewood. The bottom metal is stock as well as I wanted to keep the "Super Grade" engraving. I'd like a one piece unit, but I wanted to keep it somewhat stock looking. Kinda like a Nova with trac bars - you know something ain't right but you can't say exactly what it is. Basically what a Winchester Sendero would look like.
As it sits it's 12 lbs.

Maybe try some RL25 and Retumbo - assuming I can find some. I still have 200 gr SMKs to try and some 208 Amax that LRC said worked wonders in his Rick Rifle - mind you it’s a Dakota donor, not a pedestrian Winchester. All in all despite it’s weight I think it’ll be a dandy 1000 yard hunting rifle. Not too heavy to pack around - for now!
 
H4831SC, 215M, 210Bergers, and voila. Mine does very well with that combo. RL22 didn''t do as well in my rifle but did produce the second best overall groups.

H1000 could be good as well. Retumbo is a very dirty powder, I avoid if I can.
 
Pick the slow burning, slowest 5 or 6 powders on the list, work with those. failing that work around the burn rate of the 4350 , with moderate loads to hot , just to see..
300 has been hard to get shooting right. But with that beauty , don't give in.:cool:
What range 100 or 200 for those groups?
Would be a nice 300 h&h , with a shorter tube.;) and good express sights , or low pwr var
 
I'm quite interested to see if you kill something at or near 1000 with it. You should have lots of opportunity up there... :D
 
Rick gave it the ful meal deal...squared, trued, lugs done and bedded. You can't send a rifle to him and just have it re-barrelled. He won't do it.

And Levi, I've already got access to a nice 300 H&H Pre 64 M70. No one wanted the Old Man's when it was on the EE so I've sort of taken it over. It's going to Zim with me next summer.

I would not give up on that 300 winny, it may have a great load not tested yet. Explain the shots as they went into the target. May be a heat or fouling factor? bullet design, 168-220 or so range for bullets?

Going to Zim with my brother for Buff and some plains game. He wants a hyena and an impala and to "back up" his brother on the buff shooting. Should be an absolute blast!

The fliers were consistently #3. The first load I shot was RL22 and had 2 on top of each other then #3 as a flier (never underestimate an excited trigger man!). Same with the 7828 loads (probably my fault - fliers usually are).

I had 3 rounds that I buggered up the seating depth on (my first set of RL22 loads - WAY too deep) so I shot them as foulers. Interestingly the 25 or so shots I had fired previously in load development in SK gave me almost no powder fouling and no copper. This was a mixed bag of bullets - NPT, TSX, GS, Hot Cor and Wildcat. I cleaned the rifle before I hit the range (2 patches of Hoppes and one of Sweets) and then dried it with rubbing alcohol. The first three shots were as foulers which was when I realized that the target stand was actually at 300 yards and the mirage was WAY too bad to shoot at that distance on the aimpoints I had. I walked out and moved the target in to 100 meters (stupid Leica rangefinder and it's krautensprechen metric readings:D) then shot the first group with RL22. I waited about 5 minutes and fired the second group. After that I quit and abused myself with the 416 off sticks until the 300 cooled. Then shot the IMR4831 load (1.5" group). Then the rifle was hot again so I shot the SAN and tried a couple of different types of factory ammo. Then to the LE2B and shot it lying in the middle of the dirt trail. didn't get great groups from that position but had no rear bag (excuses!). Then back to the 300 and shot the H4831 group (1.5" or thereabouts again) and then the 4350 group that nestled into .418"

Now if the fliers for group 1 or 2 were my fault, and they could easily have been, then this thing may shoot bugholes with the 210 Bergers. It certainly wouldn't surprise me. As I said before, I'm still under 100 rounds through this rig so it's still in the process of getting broken in. If it bugholes these bullets after some work I'll be out shooting all summer getting practice and developing drop charts with the aim of slipping one of these VLDs through the lungs of a caribou and seeing how they work. 1/2" or better at 100 yards is what I'm shooting for as long as accuracy hold out there.

Fliers only show at the bench:D ;), as for the seating , a bump with the puller works magic, then its easy to seat to proper depth.
