Can anyone shed some light on the issue of hi cap mags for this rifle? I keep looking and I can't find anything. What is the legal issue on this, is it not kosher to have a 30 rounder clipped to 5? Please give me any and all feedback on this. If they are around and I just keep missing them, let me know. If it is a legal issue, let me know.
Thanks gang!

Thanks, but it's not a D, it's a regular Russian refurb. I'm looking for a Zytel or similar "banana" style magazine; the duckbill style. I just heard that they are hard to find, but I keep seeing them. It's not a big thing, I just like the look. My AR-15 has a 30 round mag clipped for 5, but if the mag was a 5 rounder it wouldn't even extend from the magwell. that just doesn't look right.

Simonov say's Danke for the culture lesson though, caio' mon ami.

You are much better off with the factory mag, they always work,
the aftermarket one some times work and you will not have any hold open
on the others, I had a couple duck bill ones, they where a POS,
Thou there may be good one out there.
And of course you can't have more than 5 shots so why bother.

"...is it not kosher..." Yep, but unless it's been altered, a real Russian SKS' comes with 10 round internal mags that aren't detachable. They're fed with stripper clips. The internal mag must be pinned to 5 as well.
Marstar lists pinned 30 round AR mags as sold out.
"...Kosher is..." Blessed by a rabbi.

Thanks Marshall.
I just like the look, it looks like an Ak-47 when it has a larger mag, other than that I don't really care. I'll keep looking till I find one though.

Closest thing I'm aware of that appears to be in stock, in Canada, and from a contributing dealer is a 5/10 for $45 from Marstar:

John mentioned recently he's sold 1000+ and never had any returned.

Otherwise, for the Zytel 5/20's, assuming you're willing to risk some cross-border shopping and that you can get them pinned to 5 rounds before importing, the most common suggestion seems to be sksman.com

The problem, as I heard it from marstar last year, is that no-one south of the border will pin before shipping. I assumed other mags were shipped intact to authorized individuals, who pinned them , but I guess not. A few mag makers in the usa make a great mag, but good luck getting one.:( Of my 30/5 mags one works perfect, the other two needed work. crappy, but I got 'em working in the end. Seemed reasonable until I bought my ar and cz858:)

Is that "tongue" (for lack of a better word) permanently affixed to the rifle? Or are SKS mads not a simple push-in-pull-down-and-out affair?

The originals are not detachable for a very good reason...ie to keep ones peasant-farmer soldier from loosing it. :D

Methinks the detachable after market ones are a waste of money as in my experience they seldom work, and especially given that in Kanuckistan we are limited to 5 rounds anyway.

Yet more junk made for the SKS market.

Folks with too much money can send me their money and I'll pit it to better use. :D

Thank you for the reply's. I have researched and understand the laws and relyability of the mags in question. Sh*t, I am an international broker; I've imported a bumper, winch, lockers and gears for my jeep from the U.S.A. I've exported a 22LR conversion kit for a Kimber 9 mil to Thailand for Chr*st sake. Everything was legal and above board, but now it's like the government doesn't dare fart for fear of sh*tting it's pants, nor will it let you. I'll settle on the 5/10 rounder from Marstar, but my point is the senselessness of the "parental control" of the powers that be. A person could have a 100 round mag verses several 5 rounders; slower going perhaps, but what is the difference? I guess the fear of someone "unpinning" one may scare some people and they look more fearsome, but in the end, it is still one shot, one kill. All in all, I just like the look of the banana mag. Sorry to offend the masses, I'm not David Koresh, I can live with 5 rounds. I just would like the look of a larger mag on the rifle, without it, it looks like a truck with a lift and tiny tires.
Simonov say's: The government will tell you the right way to wipe your *ss if you let them, and it'll only cost you 5%GST; lucky you, it used to be 7% (just wait).
