Hi from an Irish shooter

Hello all.

I have just come to Canada from Ireland. I am not a permanent resident at the minute but I probably will be in the not too distant future.

Anyway I'm just looking into the shooting scene here in BC. My experience is solely with the Irish army reserve (6yrs). I have experience with the Steyr Aug, Bren and FN Mag.

I not too sure where I stand with regards to getting a licences but I suspect I'm not eligible as of yet.

Unless they changed something recently you don't have to be a citizen to take the course and get a PAL . I have quite a few American buddies who've come up and done it . You have time to get it done and get your hunting liscences before hunting season starts but depending how long you've been here you may have to purchase non-resident liscences . When you take the Canadian Firearms Safety Training course take pistol also and get an RPAL so you can buy handguns . Get the firearms safety training course including handgun , do the hunters safety training and you're good to go . Welcome to Canada and to gunnutz . Go to the Hunting forum and you'll find lots of good guys from BC that will point you in the right direction .

No telling how useful it will be, but try to get a letter of good conduct from the chief of police and former commanding officer in Ireland. It may expedite dealings with the Canadian authorities or shooting clubs if they are able to more than a short period of time in Canada to judge your character.

sunray: Yeah so I see. I wonder why that is. They are no more dangerous than any other semi-auto rifle. Thanks for the info by the way.

maple_leaf_eh: Thanks for the tip will see what I can do.

Hey, I have a letter from the Minister of Public Safety's office stating

"Prohibited firearms have been prohibited due to the potential impact they would have if used in a crime"

The semi AUG is Prohibited, the AR15 isn't. Therefore the semi AUG is obviously more dangerous than a semi AR. The semi Tavor has been rendered completely criminal proof, and is therefore unrestricted!

Feel safe here, our Public Safety people are all over it for you, nothing will harm you.

Welcome to Canada.

DT

Ok will try not to.:)
The situation is better than at home though. Pretty much anything other than a .22 was banned and all pistols up until about 4 yrs ago.

Now it is possible to get pistols up to 9mm for the most part and rifles in various calibres. But the system is all messed up as you basically have to go to the local police chief with all info about the weapon you wish to buy. He will then give you a decision. It is totally up to him so if he decides no certain calibre eg 5.56mm Nato because he saw them use it in a crime on cops then no deal. Usually they will only let you have a .22 rifle to start of with then after a few years may let you have something else. It varies from chief to chief. I know of one case where a chief will not approve any 9mm pistol licences as he was present at an incident where weapons in said calibre were used. Many also insist on other conditions eg a secure gun room, with the house to be fitted with a monitored alarm etc.
Oh and weapons can only be purchased for target shooting or hunting. You also have to be a member of a club. There is only one range in the country that allows centre fire rifles.
