Welcome.
I'm relatively new and in Toronto also, so I probably was where you guys are a year ago. A few thoughts....
Easiest place to start with handguns in Toronto is Target Sports / Grange gun club in Gormley
If you would like trapshooting, there are a number of choices, none in Toronto of course. Hamilton Gun Club is one that I have found to be pleasant.
Watch some videos on Youtube and elsewhere on the Internet on how to shoot. Preferably get some instruction from someone who knows what they are doing.
A few other important things I learned in the last year.
-don't brag or show off about your guns. Realize that anyone can simply claim that you have done something inappropriate and police in SWAT gear will be at your door, and you can spend the next 6 months trying to clean up the mess.
-know the storage laws and transportation laws inside-out and backwards. Obey them to the letter. Print out a copy and keep it with your guns and in your storage location
-be politically active. Gun owners are under continuous attack from media and many politicians. Identify political parties and candidates that support (or at least don't harrass) gun owners, and let them know why you are on their side. Your enjoyment of your new hobby could be very easily cut right off if the party in power decides to try to make political mileage out of gun ownership and regulations.
We have an upcoming mayoral election in Toronto. Figure out who is the most gun-friendly candidate, and give them some support and tell them why.
-support Canada's shooting sports organization. the CSSA and NFA are probably the two most important. These guys are our first line of defense against the gun-haters. Join one at least one, preferably both. It will cost far less than the cost of the ammo that you will be using to put little holes in a piece of paper for the next year.
-support gun friendly stores. Buy outdoor gear, knives, etc, from stores that also sell guns. Doesn't matter if it costs a bit more. We need those stores to stay in business in a pretty hostile environment.
Most of all, conduct yourself in a way that will not make the gun owner community look like a bunch of yahoos and idiots, but rather convince the citizens that there is no reason to feel threatened by gun owners.
Enjoy the hobby. I'm happy to answer other questions if you have any.
