Hi from up north

Hello everyone, I am currently living in Iqaluit NU, originally from Cape Breton, NS.
I'm 25 and finally took the firearms safety course last week, and got 100% on written and practical! I am pretty excited about getting my first rifle and joined up to get some opinions. I am leaning toward getting a Lee Enfield no. 4 .303 surplus from S.I.R. for my first one, but not sure yet.
It has to be able to put down a polar bear at least! My friend in the military says I should get a norinco M14 and mod it up someday down the line. I like that it's a semi auto, but there are just so many options.
Anyway, looking foreward to reading some of your opinions, guys.

I thought for a moment that THE "Polar Man" from Iqaluit had joined CGN. There are a number of CGN from Iqaluit; you should make contact with them. Did you do your course with Wes?

Hello! Yeah I did, there was only 2 of us there, the weekend weeded out a few I think. I learned a lot and have a new respect for rifles. Wes does a great service, he's putting on a course every other week and charging so little for his time, he just loves it.
As for Polar Man, I doubt he needs a gun with his abilities.

my first gun was a 303. it was a deers nightmare and i don't care what some people say but i could shoot a yote at some pretty ridiculous ranges. can't say ive shot a bearwith it though but i imagine a properly placed bullet would do damage. and you do have more than one follow up shot with those guns.
(if u can't kill it with one shot don't take 10)

Hey everyone, after a long absence I just completed my restricted course a few hours ago. I believe I will be waiting until I head back to NS in a couple of months to get my first firearm, But I have been shooting my friends SKS and its a lot of fun, may become my first one.
Thanks for all the kindness guys, I think this is the beginning of a lifelong passion.

Liam

I had the greatest pleasure of working in the arctic you need a 3 gun battery one 22 for those tasty little white chickens a 12gauge for just one of those days and an old 303 will fill the bills for everything else and yes it will anchor over a polar bear. You could spend alot of money and go for all the new things with bells and whistles, but I guarantee it will not look new within a month. The North is hard on equipment, enjoy you truley are in gods country:canadaFlag:

Hey Polar man, You must have completed your restrictedcourse with my girlfriend. She also took the course with Wes. Now if we can only get our range back!

Welcome to CGN, Liam.
I am sure you will find this to be the best gun forum around.

PS, someday I would like to get up to your area.

I have certainly found this to be one of the friendliest forums around.
I think I am going to pick up a norinco m305, dont plan on modding it other then maybe refinishing the stock. I will wait for the range before I pick up a handgun, hopefully something will happen this summer.
Thanks again everyone, off to the newbie forums,

LR
