Hi All
I found this forum while goggling for cowboy shooting and Wow I have found so much info here in a day its a amazing.

Well here are my specs I have never shot or owned a gun in my life but my interests have always been in the western or cowboy era if that is the exact term.

As I grew up in the age of cowboy movies in South America I developed an interest in older pistols and rifles, spurs etc.

I moved to Toronto since I was 14 and lived in the city since then although I have traveled extensively throughout the USA and Western Canada.

I am about to migrate to the Western USA in a couple of years as I found it unbelievable that my wife who grew up shooting as a kid in the USA has the right to bear arms and me as a Canuk have no rights ( or well so I thought)..

To make a long story short I am looking to learn to shoot single action revolvers, older rifles from the older days. I am going to take the Safety courses required and would like to find folks that are seasoned shooters. I am not much into hunting but may eventually get into that later on and also get into the newer model revolvers and rifles.

I do have a question to this.
Should I start on newer firearms and work my way backwards or go old to new?

Remember I am looking to learn to shoot, proper safety/reloading/care etc.

Later on I would like to eventually own a couple of the older colts and maybe a Henry rifle.

Well there it is in a nutshell, sorry if I rambled on.

Any links or help with sources that will help me will be greatly appreciated and thanks for having me here. I look forward to learning and being here.
Peace and Love

Welcome to CGN!

Regarding your inclination towards Old West type of firearms,
you can go with the old, original examples of Colt Peacemakers and Winchester 1872/92 but they probably will not last a season of regular shooting without repair....plus they are collectors with a lot of value.

Or you can buy reproductions/replicas at more reasonable prices. They'd be of modern manufacture and materials so more durable and parts are available as well.

JMO...I'd go with used late model firearms. That way you will find what you like and can trade what you don't and you won't get hurt too bad in the wallet. Good luck!

Do you have your PAL or RPAL

Gessuz, Wendell. Make your pictures smaller.
"...start on newer firearms..." Yep. Cost you less and most collector 19th Century firearms aren't for shooting. Too valuable. Best to forget shooting a vintage, say, Colt SAA. Plus they're for black powder. Not that BP is a big deal. Just more work.

Welcome to the Cowboy Action Addiction. I've been very happy with my Ruger Vaquero twins and my Marlin lever action. Try to get revolvers and rifle in the same caliber to simplify things.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks and the all the great advice.

I am looking into the getting my Pal and Rpal as soon as I can which will be in a couple of months as I want to take a few of the courses.
I also have to put in some overtime so the wife doesn't get unhappy as I would like to collect some of the old guns.

I agree wtih sunray that the older ones are for collecting so I am gonna look into the replicas so I'm looking a quite a few bucks.

I will check in again soon I have to get to work.
Thanks again and Peace to all
