Hi I'm new on this site and interested in handguns

Is there anyone in the Toronto area that would like to let me try out some of their handguns at an indoor range? I'm don't have my PAL yet, so would have to go as your guest.

I hope to enventually purchase a couple of handguns, but don't really know what would be the right fit for me.

I have been to an outdoor range and practiced on a revolver and semi-automatic, but haven't tried at an indoor range. Years ago I also used to shoot skeet and used a crossbow.

Welcome aboard! :D
Can't help you out in the T.O. area... but if you travel a bit west... ;)
There are a few members in your neck of the woods.
Hopefully they'll be checking this forum.
Good luck, and nice to see another woman shooter among the ranks!

Thanks for the info.

I certainly don't have a problem driving to the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Is there an indoor shooting range there?

I'll certainly look further into each of them. How difficult is the written test to get a PAL? How knowledgeable is a "newbie" expected to be to pass the test?

welcome mama!!! good to see more women here, your PAL course is a pass/pass course, you jump through the hoops, learn how to safely hold, load, fire. everyone passes, you can do it!!!

Trip to Kitchener

Yes. Colby gun club at the north end of the city.
I have a membership there, as do a few other CGN'ers

Well, maybe one Saturday I could meet you at your club, and you'd be willing to let me try a few of your handguns. What equipment would I have to bring
for myself?

Thanks for the confidence

I just downloaded the instruction manuals from this site, but haven't even had a chance to look at them. They look pretty hefty, so don't know how easy it is going to be to absorb the necessary information.....

i have some firearms related knowledge from growing up, but if you take the course, you do not need to read anything first, they walk you through it, and teach you the nessassary "required" info, and skip the dry boring rest of it.

Hey Mama,

If you're interested to drive to Burlington, the Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club could provide you with an excellent opportunity to observe a variety of different shooting disciplines - including IPSC, PPC, Bullseye Pistol, Sport Pistol, Metalic Silhouette and of course Target Rifle and Black Powder.

I'm a rifle shooter so can't really help you directly. However if you check the website and come out to the club on an evening of your interest (weekly shooting disciplines are posted on the website), I'm sure you'll get some assistance - and you'll probably find someone who will gladly let you try-out some different equipment. The club and it's members do a really good job of promoting shooting sports. I'd suggest a Monday night for Target Pistol to start - Claude is the Pistol Director and they are a good group.

Wednesday nights are rifle nights if you're interested.

Good luck - see you at the range - SD

Burlington Rifle & Revolver Club

Thanks for the information. I'm also interested in the rifle shooting, so might consider coming out on a Wednesday night. Would I have to join to get in,
or are visitors allowed?

Would I have to bring any equipment of my own to use, even if I'm just watching not participating?

"Years ago I also used to shoot skeet and used a crossbow."

Wow. I never thought of shooting skeet with a crossbow!

Ha ha ha! Just kidding. Do whatever you have to do and get other women interested.

There are two lines of fire on Wednesday nights - one starting about 7 and the other at 8:30 or so.

Visitors and guests are welcome. There would most likely be an opportunity at the end of the relay(s) to do some casual shooting.

If you have it - bring eye and ear protection

Good luck - SD

Welcome aboard, it's nice to see that more women are entering this sport. I'd be happy to show you how to shoot my firearms. I live in the north east end of the City, and am have recently joined a club just north of the city limits. I shoot Single Action revolver as well as Semi-Auto. If you'd like, you can come to the club with me one evening for a "guest" shoot. My schedule is pretty tight, but we can try to work a mutually feasable evening.

I also recommend starting your PAL courses ASAP. I took mine with York Region Firearms, and can say that they are very thorough and patient. Your money will be well spent.

Again, welcome to the site, and to the sport. I hop you enjoy many happy hours with both.

Thanks for your offer. I'd be more than willing to drive up to your club one evening to try your guns. I'm also fairly busy, but hopefully we can figure out a night that works for both of us. I'll send you a private message with some nights that might work for me next week or sometime thereafter.

I looked into starting my PAL courses, but York Region Firearms is totally booked until the new year....so it looks like it will be 2008 for me. but in the meantime I won't mind "getting a feel" for a few guns.

Target Sports in Gormely (404 & Stoufville Rd) has courses from time to time - call Pat 905 888-8288 to enqure. You can also challenge the exam - there is an exam centre beside McDonalds, south side on Hwy 27 just south of Albion Rd. There are videos you can view on the CFC website and practice exams on www.gunexams.com. Target Sports has the PAL & RPAL study books. I used all those resources and scored upper 90's on both exams with very little prior experience.

Wow, thanks for all the information....
I'll take a look at the videos, and I'm sure I'll need to practice the exams.
Thanks again. I can't believe how helpful everyone on this site has been to me in the short time I've been a member.
