Are there any types of action shooting that allow the Browning Hi-power? I was thinking of getting back into pistol shooting comp but when looking at the rules for steel challenge and similar sports it seems like single action only pistols are not allowed. Am I reading this incorrectly?

On a related note I was thinking that the rules might need to change going forward if the handgun ban comes in. Can't really expect people to compete if they can't buy a gun that fits the rules.

Single action are accepted in IPSC, Steel Challenge and IDPA. For IPSC you'd be in Standard (should be in Classic but I don't write the rules) and in Steel you'd be in Limited I think. Not sure what division you'd be in for IDPA, but I know people shoot em in there, but just like in the other two, not commonly.

You can shoot it in IDPA in Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division, but if you still have a working mag safety, it makes clearing the gun at the end of a run a pain. You have to take out the mag when finished shooting and put an empty mag back in to drop the hammer when you are finished. IDPA would not let you remove the mag safety from the gun until just recently.

I've always shot a cz75b cocked and locked, so ESP. Shot a match with a hi power last month for the first time. Yeah clearing the gun added a bit more but kept a spare empty mag in the side pocket for this. not really a big deal and the RO was good about it.

Not everybody is good about mag safety. I shot house league PPC and some days we just use 22s. A guy used his MK4 Ruger and it had a mag safety. There is a very opinionated person that yells, get rid if that mag safety if you want to continue to shoot with us.

A browning hi power in 9mm would be accepted in ipsc standard division shooting minor. That means an a zone hit scores 5 same as major but if you hit outside the a zone then minor scores lower than major. You should consider removing the mag safety. It prevents mags dropping free, makes for a gritty trigger pull as the plunger is rubbing against the mag and finally it will make for a very awkward unload and show clear.

you would need to drop the mag clear the gun then reinsert an empty mag then pull trigger. Then remove the empty mag and reholster. So adding some steps from a regular pistols unload and show clear and if youmake any mistake likeforget to remove the empty mag before reholster than you will be disqualified. Meaning you wont score and you wont be able to shoot anymore in the match.

As for other single action only well in Open division, Standard Division, Classic Division they would be by far the most popular pistols in ipsc.

Thanks for the tips and info. I took the mag safety out years ago but it was possible to reach into the mag well with my left middle finger and press the mag safety to drop the hammer back when it was still in place. The main reason I took it out was to improve the trigger, love the trigger with the mag safety removed.

WHen I first started shooting IDPA about 25 years ago, I used my BHP Mark III for a few years, but got a nice CZ 85 Combat that was superior to BHP in many ways so I occasionally shot the CZ in ESP, but mostly in SSP. When shooting ESP, I found I had trouble getting the CZ safety off while the BHP was much easier for that with my hands. The transition from DA to SA in the first shot in SSP is occasionally challenging, but the CZ is very accurate and steadier than a polymer framed gun for me.
