Hi-Power, internal / external exctractor ?

Why are some Hi Powers equipped with internal extractors and some external extractors....why did the design change...is there an issue with the older FN models with the internal ?

The original design was for an internal extractor, and the change was for ease of and less machining. The external one is a flat bar with simple cuts as opposed to the internal.

The internal one is similar to the 1911, and some manufacturers have gone to an external extractor.
