Ok guys looking for some help here
elk hunter with a custom rig rifle
light weight rifle heavy barrel , hi power scope ,long range
recently just missed a 6pt bull elk due to sun glare
i knew it was a problem earlier in the year .but it's a new rig and I'm trying to learn the rifle .
.the scope in question a swfa ss 20x 42 in low light and first light I get a solar glare.
I have already ordered a sightron 8x32x56 to replace the fixed 20 swfa.
im assuming that all the high power will require some sort of sun shade
my concern is that a sunshade will add 6 inches to a 17 inch scope making it already to big for a lighter set up .
then the other option is ARD that will not add in length or weight . I am concerned that the ARD won't give me the desired effect .....

your thoughts

James

The sun shade will add no more weight than an ARD.... The downside of the tenifer ARDs is that they block a lot of light from entering the scope, which sucks for low light situations.

About a year ago I stumbled across a guy in New Zealand making custom steel ARDs from thin and strong honeycomb steel, letting triple the amount of light transfer over the tenifer ones.... But sadly the forum I found it on went defunct and I can't find it again. Shame, because those were great.

Anyways, I would say try the sunshade at the range and at home, I don't think it will hinder you or get in your way, but see if it works for you. If not, ARDs are not overly expensive, and you could always sell it if you did not like it.

I would agree with Kevin in the fact that the sun shade adds virtually no weight to it and works great I run a 4 inch shade on my ATACR and would not have a scope without

My Sightron SII 6.5X20X50mm came with a 4 inch sunshade and it's extremely light. You won't notice the weight difference with it on or off.

Sunshade is always better unles you are on the two way shooting range. THen ard offerd some advantage in camouflaging the shooter better.

I have both ard and 4" sunshade. The sunshade never darkens he image. The ard on the other hand makes the glass on my Schmidt and B2,523 PMII look like a bushnell trophy, and my bushnell trophy look like I painted the lense with woodstain.
