Hi Standard post Connetticuit

Real High Standards were made in Connecticut. I have not heard anything good about the Texas-made copies.

Esto,
I had models from all the older production shops and could see a difference in the finish but not the accuracy. My 104 Supermatic Trophy spacegun (1954 Hamden/Hartford, Conn) shot no better than my my SH series Victor (1882 New York). The finish on the 104 looked like it was dipped in oil. It was perfect, shiny and had very deep bluing. The SH had tooling marks all over it and the blueing was thin and pale. With the right ammo they were both laser beams.

thanks 3morewishes,

I guess it really just depends on a numebr of factors like owner maintenance and the ammo used. I'm sure the high standard im getting will live up to its name.

The company had changed owners in 1968. The new owner, with a focus on production, sales, and profit, failed to maintain the standard that had been held before. In 1977, they also changed plants, from Hamden to a much smaller plant in East Hartford, in a move that also eliminated much of the plant's capability and so resulted in the sub-contracting of many aspects of production (including bluing, polishing, and stock making) and selling off High Standard's parts' business. In 1978 the company changed hands again, starting production as "High Standard Inc."

This period, marked by the move from Hamden to East Hartford, is widely associated with a general decline in product quality.

While the collector of High Standards may be more inclined to value Hamden production over either the (contemporary) Texas or the East Hartford production, I have never heard anyone imply that Texas-produced High Standards shot any poorer than earlier Connecticut-produced pistols. The shooter - unlike the fussy collector - will certainly be happy with either.

This is a useful resource:

Very Good Wendell, much appreciated.

The victor I bought is marked, as far as I can tell, as high standard inc. yet it also appears to say Conn. USA. I am by no measure a collector. All I'm looking for is a target pistol that I can improve with. My groupings are crap right now but not total crap.
