Just looking at Higginson's site and the powders they have in stock.

Prices are very decent, even with shipping, if you're purchasing 8 pound jugs.

H100V under $50/pound. If I wasn't well stocked already, it would be on an order pdq.

It's just one I use a lot of and IMHO very under appreciated.

There are several others which are out of stock most places.

Don't know how long this will last, prices way below Western Metal.

Used to enjoy going in on a bulk order with some others, we'd order enough to get free shipping, which was something like 40lbs and up?

Do they sell jugs? I remember cardboard boxes with a bag as a liner, but that was a long time ago.

While I agree they are a good place to buy, these days even Higginson's is more out of stock than in stock on powder.

And I used to really like the transparency on shipping costs. "Buy X pounds and we'll cover the hazmat fee" was emblazened right on top of their ads and order forms. Now I look at their website and there is no hint if shipping to me will cost next to nothing, or take my next mortgage payment. Yes, if I was serious about stocking up I would go through the trouble to get a quote, but right now I'm using it as an excuse to argue I can wait until Titegroup is back in stock.

As to Western Metal, well I have dealt with both their industrial and shooting businesses, and if another supplier is not way below WM pricing, they are doing it wrong.

I don't see any of the "surplus" powders on the site anymore. They just sell "cannister grade" powders in regular 1lb and 8lb bottles.

A buddy and I did a top up order for 19 or 20 pounds total of different powders, and all totalled there was $71 is shipping and haz mat fees, $3.74/pound if I remember correctly.
Buying powder, one pound at a time, is the most expensive alternative.

For those buying one pound of powder, go to your local gun shop.

Higginson's is offering low pricing because they purchase huge lots, directly from the manufacturers, or at least they used to. That's why they had so many non cannister powders available.

Some of the powders came from pulled down military cartridges, which had been broken down for components and many, likely most, were non cannister grade one offs, sold to commercial loaders for specific runs of cartridges.

I think those were 70s prices I find that hard to believe as I have bought lots of powder in large lots from them and never got prices like that ever?
You paid more than ~$3.74 per pound in shipping and hazmat in the 1970's?
It took me a bit to find the invoice in my deleted emails, but here you go.

Clearly john-brennan didn't realize you meant dollars per pound of powder in hazmat fees. He thought you paid $3.74 per pound for the powder. Which would be like 1940's prices, LMAO!!!

In the early 1970's when I first stared handloading you could buy single pounds of canister grade powder from Harkley and Haywood in Vancouver for $3.25 per lb. And across the boarder at Yeagers department store they had a 500lb hopper in the store of surplus H-4831, sold it in paper bags for $1.25. Companies make this stuff now for mere pennies per lb.

Yeager's made a lot of money on that cheap powder. They bought it off government surplus sales auctions.

I remember a fellow from Hogdon's in Nebraska, where they kept huge sheds full of similar powders, telling me Jaeger's outbid them on a half dozen rail cars of "loose" powder with an undetermined burn rate. Yaeger bought it in 100 pound paper bags on a gamble it would be useful.
This was in 1967.

I believe he paid 8 cents a pound for it "delivered" to his farm, just behind the store. It took them years to sell it all.

Like all such auctions, the winning bidder had a couple of days to get their items removed from whichever facility it was auctioned out of.

Story goes, he couldn't find anyone to haul it for him, so he bought a truck and hired a half dozen guys to help move it all to a warehouse nearby, until he could get a storage shed built in Washington. I believe he purchased 200,000 pounds.

He bought other types later, but not in such large quantities.

They were lucky it was the same powder Bruce Hogdon bought labeled as OEM4350 and later renamed 4831 and later H4831, because it was much slower than any 4350 powders at the time.

When I make orders from Higginson I'll do a group order and buy 30+ pounds of powder.. they have the best prices and waive the hazmat fee for large orders. If you want to buy small amounts buy local.

Well the prices are sure to jump the more people you tell about them. Don't worry though, I'm sure we'll see the same powder on the EE in a month when Higginson is out of stock, marked up 50-100%

No waiving of the haz-mat fees anymore, I’m afraid.

You don't really believe what you're saying ??????????????????

Wait, I know, you think only a few people know about Higginson's???????????

If they don't sell their stock, in a reasonable time, they don't stay in business.

If you can't afford to stock up?????????????????

I find it even their reloading equipment and optics are generally better priced with shipping charges included. The downside, inventory dependent and there might be a wait time.
