Hello, I am currently doing some research on high end 22's for my next purchase. Just wondering if I've missed anything.

I would like something with iron sights, and so far the only models I have found are the Anshutz 1710 and Cooper 57-M (which I only assume is available with irons, as sights are listed in options on their web site). I really like what I've read about the 1710, except for the 7+ lb weight.

I don't believe Kimber makes anything with iron sights. Are there any other high end 22's that come stock with iron sights? How difficult is it to install irons on a rifle (obviously this question is for smiths, I wouldn't dare tackle it!).

Every google search for high end 22's seems to be about 10/22's, Marlins and Savages. I guess people have a different opinion than me about what "high end" means, which I don't believe to be a relative term.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Could you install some sights on a good rifle? Or, if you bought one new, could you ask the company to install them from the factory? I don't know what kind of price range you're looking at, but I'm pretty sure once you start paying a few grand for a .22 caliber rifle, you could probably request the company install some sights, even if they're specific to some other model they produce.

Sorry I can't help you out any more than that... Are there any other options in Europe or the States that you could get through an importer?

I have looked into the CZ's, which I was really close to buying (I love my 858). However, I recently acquired some money that I would like to invest towards a really nice 22 to retain the sentiment of the money that I received. I am looking for something in the 2k range plus or minus.

Who are some of the other custom makers out there that I should have a look at?

Henry has some special edition .22 rifles in the $1000+ range. Nice looking rifles that would make awesome (yet expensive) display/keep sake rifles.

Iron sights, Fully functional for plinking or hunting and priced to be considered "High End"

I think you are on the right track with cooper. In fact you might want to talk to clay at prophet river. Buy a nice wood blank of wood pick the action you want and have cooper put it together for you. I really don't think you need to keep looking. It will be beautiful, accurate and personal. Anschutz are nice but won't be one of a kind like the cooper, in North America cooper will likely hold its value better as North Americans tend to value North American more than German. A nice cooper repeater will do like the rem 40x repeater in time and be worth a small kings ransom. We're it me i would be calling Clay.

Do what he said! :D

Whatever happened to those Beautiful Kimber .22s we used to see over here in UK for Rolls-Royce prices?

Last one here, in its wooden transit box, was over $3000.

However, if all you want to do is to spend money on a high-end open-sight .22, I can help you for certain. My local dealer has .22 rifles by Cogswell & Harrison, Holland & Holland, and others....a nice Holland & Holland double rifle in .22 might interest you, as well. That's for sale for the equivalent of Can$14500.

Let me know if you are interested.

another interesting find would be the new Anschutz Fortner, mind you it comes in 17 hmr. Its a custom order, 6 month wait and will run around 3k, you will have to special request iron sights, but I think it could be done. and you want irons from the factory not, aftermarket on such higher end pieces.

the more I think about this the more I think Cooper is your rifle. Maybe the guys that have coopers can jump in with their 'unbiased' opinions.

Couple of nice CZs here:

Are you after the typical plain irons that are both on the barrel or are you looking to get something with target peep sights?

My club runs a Jr .22 program that uses Savage single shot Mk I FVT that comes from the factory with a really nice peep rear and globe front sight combo. The repeater version is, oddly enough :D, the Mk II FVT.

The two adults that are running this show get the odd time to try these rifles and it's not uncommon for both of us to put all our shots into .5 inch groups at 20 yards shooting from prone without the aid of any rests other than our wobbly arms. So you KNOW that the rifles are capable of better than this.

It's not an Anschutz or other high end bench rest rifle but if you want to test yourself it's one option to consider.

Another is to be patient and find a BSA Martini that comes with Parker Hale peep rear and globe front sights. I managed to score such a rifle a while back and I shame it with my lack of skill. It only shoots as well as I can shoot those Savages. But that only confirms that I am the limiting factor. Other shooters of worth have done amazing things with a nice BSA Martini.

dizzy, thank you for re-affirming feelings that I was already having. Being able to choose the specifications down to the lumber is priceless. I am going to contact Clay and get this ball rolling.

Does anyone have any pictures of Coopers with irons? Although I do shoot targets, I don't care for peep sights. I would like to have the leaf farthest back on the receiver for maximum sight radius, but still have the ability to run a scope whenever I fancy. I'm not sure how Cooper typically does their iron sights.

Many thanks to everyone else that replied.

I researched quarter ribs with sights and have a better idea of how the irons would be. Still interested in pictures if anyone has them (which I doubt, seems all the Coopers are mostly just tapped for bases. Irons don't get any love).

Also, it would be appreciated if any Cooper owners would like to comment about their impressions on their rifles, rimfires and otherwise.

.......I would like to have the leaf farthest back on the receiver for maximum sight radius,......

The standard iron sights don't work that way. The reason it is up on the barrel halfway down the gun is to ensure that they are not so far out of focus that they are not doing anything. Move them back onto the receiver and the notch will be so blurry that it'll be useless.
