So after having adopted a high thumbs grip following some training a while back, my shooting hand thumb sits on the slide release. This causes the gun to usually not lock back on an empty mag and infuriates me to no end because the pistol otherwise runs like a champ.

Here are some pics:

Workarounds? I really like the control of a thumb high grip, but no matter the contortions (like hooking my back thumb or laying it on the other hand) nothing feels natural. I have relatively small hands so this might just be a problem for me.

Running my right hand thumb lower just forces my left thumb too low and into the trigger guard.

I'm not really willing to go to a low grip just for this particular pistol. So is it time to just sell the pistol?

You could grind the tab off of the slide lock lever.... Those levers aren't expensive, I'd probably give that a try...

two things, rotate your left hand forward more, it will help you drop the thumb down. and as above, put your right thumb more on your left one.

I have the same issue with my HK P2000. Most times it's fine, but the problem is more pronounced with gloves. I have a spare slide release coming from wolverine that has a date with my dremel tool. I'm going to shave it flat. There's still enough room at the bottom of the release to push it up if I have to manually lock the slide back. I don't use it to return the slide to battery so the serrations aren't necessary.

im no expert, but this is the grip ive worked out with my p229, doesnt hit the slide release

my right thumb is more onto my left hand than super tight on the pistol

My left hand is really cranked forward. Any more and my left thumb drops into the trigger guard. There isn't any room on the side of the grip for my right thumb without somehow hitting the slide release. I guess I'll try stacking the thumb on the other hand, but its less contact on the pistol and less natural when I lay the support hand on after drawing (as I have to lift up the thumb then lay it down again once the second hand joins the grip).

I may have to get out to a skills and drills night. Been meaning to for a while.

I may try shaving down the release (I don't use it except for malf clearance).
