high/hyper velocity .22lr and barrel life

In doing some reading over at rimfire central they seem to think that shooting high and hyper velocity .22lr rounds has an exponential impact on shortening the lifespan of barrels. Is the fact or myth?

I specifically ask because I've got a 597 VTR and don't want to abuse it. I want to make sure this thing stays mint.

Thanks in advance.

Many rimfires shoot 50,000+ rounds before the accuracy is affected. Even if you lost 10% of that, would it matter? You will likely do more damage to the barrel with poor clenaing habits (and cleaning too often) than you ever could by shooting it.

If they have the proof then I would believe them. It would be nice to see some pics of shot out rimfire barrels. It happens, as wear is inevitable, but how many rounds? no clue.

What do they mean by exponential? Like barrel wear will increase by a factor raised to the multiple of standard velocity?

IMO, hyper velocity ammo may slightly impact barrel life, obviously because of increased friction from the bullet traveling down the bore about 30-40% faster than standard velocity.

However, 1,500 fps is not much really, considering 5.56/.223 travels 3,300 fps. Throat erosion is probably not an issue as well.

I wouldn't worry one whit about the issue.

.22LR barrel life can be considered indefinite with any load for all practical purposes. There are very few people who run enough rounds through a .22 to notice any difference.

Amazing

The jist of it was something along the lines of; for every 100 rounds of high velocity down pipe, it produced the same wear as about 5 or 6 hundred of standard velocity.

This claim seemed a little bit ridiculous. Internet education at its finest.:HR:
