I'm looking to build a custom
Scout rifle and I would like to use a military Mauser action because of the thumb cutout and stripper clip guide. What are the highest quality/slickest Mauser actions around? I imagine the German ones?

Thanks

NOT from Mitchell's Mauser's

I might look at a Swedish Mauser. Same design but better steel.
And the later German ones were of poor quality, slave labor, poor materials, poor fit and finish/tooling marks....The stress of war on the battle weary Germans.

German, Czech, and FN all made high quality rifles and actions. Stay away from late war production actions and you should be fine. I personally think some of the German contract rifles made for the various South American countries to be of the finest quality as far as fit and finish. Just don't chop up an all original rifle for the action.

Umm I don't think so. I've never seen a German mauser I didn't like.

I'd give serious consideration VZ.24 BRNO Mauser 98 actions. I really like the German made small ring 98 mausers especially those used on the 1908 Brazilian mausers. So long as you're not tearing down an original miolsurp specimen., There are lots of sporter mausers out there you can use.

I am agree with ciphery ont the Swed but you might look at the Czech ones.
They built the famous VZ-24 in the 20's and 30's before the stress and hurry up production of the war. The Vz lines are view as one of the best build mod98 mauser ever, if not the better. The Czech take their iron work very seriously back then.

Personally, I wouldn't consider any M/94/96/38, nor any other rpre-98 being equal to a M/98, small or large ring.
I totally agree with Riflechair, I personally really like the VZ 24 actions.
You might also look at finding an early Parker-Hale which used the military actions, as did many post WWI and WWII sporting rifles, such as Voere. If you seriously look, you can find a cheap one.

Agreed, The Swedish actions are "very" good. But look around to see what is out there. Oh never touch a military rifle to do a project...sorry, we cringe and cry......:) too many sporters as Riflechair said.

You're right polaris. I was thinking of the G33/40 and for some reason 1908 came out. I feel like a bone head now.
The 1908 is a large ring mauser

LARGE RINGS: K98k German, M98 Persian, 1909 Argentine, 1909 Peruvian, 1910 Costa Rican, Czech VZ24-BRNO, 1924 Yugoslav (***1924 Yugo was made both Long 7-13/16 & Short 7-5/8 so make sure you measure if you're ordering a stock"), 1935 Peruvian, 1903 Turkish, 1908 Brazilian & 1938 Turk.

- Mauser 98 Military - Long Action - Large Ring (7-13/16" Between Lug Holes, 1-3/8" Front Receiver Ring)
- Mauser 98 Military - Long Action - Small Ring (7-13/16" Between Lug Holes, 1-1/4" Front Receiver Ring)
- Mauser M48 Military - Short Action - Large Ring (7-5/8" Between Lug Holes, 1-3/8" Front Receiver Ring)

try tradeexcanada at the top of the page . they have a lot of good 98 rifles in there hunting rifle section .most would be good for a custom project. and some military 98's in the military section that would be good also.

You forgot the FN "24/30" (Venezuelan "Short Rifle") :)

The Swedes don't use the 98 action, they use the 96 action. It is ####-on-close and has a two-position safety opposed to the 98 being ####-on-open and three position safety (two name the two major differences.)

I love sporterized milsurps, and theres plenty around to ''improve''so you don't need to touch an original-and besides-originals are worth about double or triple an already sporterized one.

I've just finished refinishing an already sporterized 6.5x55 that I bought soley because it had a Norma peepsite[scarce as hens teeth].The trigger was already worked on,so all that remained was the stock to do. The military stock was sanded down,a schnable forend shaped and then restained and refinished and hard waxed and rubbed until it glows.I now have another very fine hunting rifle to add to my collection of swedes.

The actions made by Zastava in the former Yugoslavia are also VERY common. Many of them were retailed under different names, including Parker-Hale and BSA. They will all have had to pass British proof, however, and will be marked up accordingly.

Exactly - hence the [usually] straight bolt handle - as found on my 1898 CG converted to m/38 format.

Parker hale actions are from Spain (also sold as Santa Barbra), early actions were made by FN. Zastava actions are a short M98 action. BSA made sporter rifles out of mil surplus (P-17, p-14, etc) they made the Monarch, the CF2, as well as the majestic. They are not mauser based, Quite unique in design.

The Swedish military used the M96 actions (and variation, etc). Husqvarna commercial sporters used M98 actions (bought from FN & Husky made M98 actions) eventually evolving into the 1600. They also made many M96 based sporter rifles.

Now as I remember, the Military M96 rifles have a three position safety, unless it has been dickered with...
