At the range yesterday and the discussion was around loading 9mm with Titegroup ... I mentioned that I followed the Hodgdon guidelines for 124 gr jacketed bullets which was a min load of 3.6 gr and a max of 4.1 gr ... I was chastised that "those are starter loads" ... true or false?

What's the highest SAFE powder load you have found?

Thx.

Depends on the gun. +P rated? +P+ rating? Age & condition? Karma? I've found Hodgdon's data to be very reliable, exceed their max at your own risk and peril.

I've used 4.1 for years, I think the Hornady or speer book lists higher. There is always a variation from the various companies, and ALL their loads are conservative for liability reasons. I always check with multiple sources before I start a new load

I accidentally loaded 4.8grs with 124's
Shot 500 of them after a proper workup out of my cz p07 duty.
Mildly flat primers if i recall. They made major power factor for ipsc lol...
Do not try it without proper testing!

Every gun has different 'tastes'. What one will handle with a smile will turn another into junk very quickly. What ome will handle can be impressively destructive - on both ends - for another.

It's not like there are no other choices. You want Magnum power, buy a Magnum.

Hey thanks to all that have answered here ... I don't have any intention of going past 4.1 gr ... just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something here ...

Thanks again

Get a chrono and check your primers. I have not been able to emulate the velocities of any manufacturer's "max loads" in my 226 at their listed OAL's. My 124gr load is over 4.2gr of Titegroup @ 1.12. Gets me around 1050 fps without pressure signs.

4 seems to be the magic load that my 9's all have liked with the campro 124

I don't know what the OAL is off hand - I start at the specified one and plunk test / adjust until it fits in everything.

I use 1.110", shorter than most. I find it works with all my 9mm's at 1.120, but my m&p 9mm likes the shorter round

I know I've got it written down in my book. I just never think of it with set-and-forget dies and the sheer mindlessness of reloading batches of 4,000 rounds at a time lol.

There's another good thing about the plated bullets - no worry of lube buildup in the seating die screwing with the OAL.

Mostly depends on the bullet and seating depth.

Following all taken from Hodgdon Reloading site:

max 4.4 gr Titegroup with 125 gr SIE FMJ,
max 3.2 gr Titegroup with 125 gr Hornady HAP
max 4.0 gr Titegroup with 125 gr LCN

What kind of shooting are your reloading for? Target/bullseye shooting? Trying to make a PF for IPSC competition? Casual plinking?

Titegroup is a great powder for target loads and "lighter" loads. It's a fast burning powder though so very tricky when trying to work up max loads. If you want max speeds, use a slower burning powder like HS6 or Longshot. I worked up a 9mm major load with Longshot under a 124gr Campro projectile. Got it up to 1320fps, BUT you better make sure your gun and barrel are rated for 9mm major loads.

For the effect of throw weights on accuracy, look up some of Ganderites posts. He's had decades of experience reloading and very informative posts on finding the right load to maximize accuracy for each handgun.

I use just under 4.0g of Titegroup with my Campro 124s. You want to be careful with Titegroup as it is one of the lowest volume powders to use in pistol and overcharging can happen easily, especially to the less experienced reloader chugging away with his progressive press. You can be at 6.0 and it doesn't look much different in the case. I stay a couple grains under max to be safe.
