I opened a case of this today and took out a sealed five pack of 100. I remembered it shot well in my milsurp 7.62x51 rifles and the Rem 700 ADL I have.

A friend asked me to look at a Savage 99 that his father had given him and it wouldn't shoot well any more.

He had put on a Burris Elite scope that wasn't to bad but the front base was to thin. This was just the beginning of the issues.

The fore end retaining screw had been tightened until it cracked the wood and the butt stock must have been used as a bat. It was cracked in several places right into the wrist. No wonder it wouldn't shoot a decent group.

Several days later and a bunch of Acraglas in the cracks it was time for testing. The rifle groups well now, with Winchester Gray Box 165 grain bullets.

The thing is, I was limited to 5 rounds of the Winchester so I thought I would just drop in some milsurp to foul it first. Son of a B. I forgot how hot that stuff was. It shot 3 inches higher at 100 yards and into a four inch group. That 99 kicked like the proverbial mule. After 3 shots, that was enough for me, especially in that light little rifle with a metal butt plate.

I went home, about 5 minutes from the range and picked up the old Rem 700 adl. Went back to the range and shot a few groups with it. Whole different story. The 700 with a Decelerator Sorbothane pad made recoil a lot tamer and the groups shrank to under an inch. That stuff is hot though. Maybe to hot for the Savage 99.

You're likely seeing, well, feeling the difference in weight between a battle rifle and a 99.
If somebody suggests the milsurp was made for MG's, it's nonsense. Used in 'em for sure, but not made for it.

No, the bullet weight in the Hirtenberger is 15 grains lighter than the Winchester Gray box offering.

I chronied both types and the Hirtenberger is about 200fps faster than the Winchester out of a 24in bbl. The difference in firearm weight may have some relevance but the Hirtenberger offering is much hotter.

I was averaging 2800 with the Hirt out of the 700 and 2525 approximately of course, with the Winchester. If it were all about rifle weight, recoil from the Winchester ammo should have been harsher than the Hirt. It wasn't. Actually it was rather mild in comparison.

No, this stuff didn't have black painted primers. I was sealed with a light green sealant.

I chronied the speeds this morning around 8pm before it got to warm. About 20c. Now, it is close to 35c.

I have a notation in my Rem 700 log stating this stuff is hot but accurate. I made this notation about 10 years ago.
