Wondering if anyone knows why so many older Canadian indoor handgun ranges are 20 yards.

In the US 50 ft and 25 yard are popular- likely influenced by Bullseye shooting.

For Olympic (ISSF, formerly ISU) 25m is the logical distance.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

in the case of one of the old ranges I belong to, it was how much room we had after having room for waiting room, back stop, etc in the old hall

Because the targets ( supplied by Shooting Federation of Canada) were 20 yard targets and indoor matches were 20 yards. Outdoor matches were 25 yards, outdoor ISU matches were 25 and 50 meters. I was involved in building the Abbotsford indoor range/clubhouse in the early 1970’s, this was current at that time. Same thing ten years later when we built the indoor range/clubhouse for Bulkley Valley Rod & Gun Club in Smithers. This was the indoor range standard at this time.
