If the barrel as shipped is under 18.5 inches, it's restricted.

H&K's internal policy is the same as German law. They will not knowingly sell the G36 to civilians. They will sell to police, military, and movie prop companies. What happens to the guns once the export permit is approved and out of control of H&K is stricktly a matter for local laws.

Yeah, apparently HK was mighty upset that the G36s got into civilian hands. But it really doesn't matter, because it's perfectly legal for a person with the right PAL to own them here.

:p to you HK!

could a restricted have a non-restricted barrel installed, then it would be a verifier's call on classification?

Unless restricted by name through an order in council, a firearm must meet the statutory definition of restricted to be classed as such.

If you are talking about swapping out a sub 18.5 inch barrel for a longer one, and having it re-registered, than it's not a question of the verifiers call. If it no longer meets the definition of restricted, than it will be reclassified as non-restricted.

Yes, the 20in bbl version is unrestricted, abeit extremely expensive. They are branded as LEO-only in the US because converting them to fully automatic requires only swapping the Trigger Group for a Full-Auto one, easily available.

they are branded as LEO only because of the importation ban on assault weapons. has nothing to do with the trigger group. how hard is it to make an AR auto??

You are right, in that the semi auto version could not be imported into the US as is. However, even if it was US made, the G36 as it exists today would still be LEO in the US. Since there is no difference in the reciever of the semi auto and the full auto, US law conciders them all to be full auto.

For a better explaination, do a google search of "push pin vs clipped H&K lowers"

Since Canada only seems to care about if the gun was actually assembled as a full auto, this does not apply to us.
