Hello. Ive got a birthday coming up and will be providing a list of wants and needs to the wife for her convenience. On one of those lists sits a new 9mm
Ive narrowed it down to 2+1. The first is the canik tp9 sfx. Ive borrowed my buddys and although the bore axis seems a lil high it was a decent gun with a nice trigger and i shot it well. Secondly is the hk sfp9. I love the paddle mag release as my last walther had it. Hk has its lovers and haters but none of my close friends have one i can borrow to try out
Lastly is the hk45 but its outside the budget for the wife and although im a 1911 guy id like to try a poly 45

Anyone care to share their preferences either way?

They're similar for what they offer out of the box, but there's alot more aftermarket for the SFP9 (VP9) aswell as more adjustable grip.

If you like the paddle release, HK and Walther offer that with a few models. There's also the VP9 OR released now, or the long slide, so more options.

Ive yet to find a truely negative review of the canik. Colion noir had some minor remarks but overall he liked it. I find him to be brutally honest in his reviews and sootch00 also liked it. I didnt mind shooting my buddys. The hk having the more options for grip size is a plus as itll likely be new shooters putting the most rounds thru the gun. Im not of of a pistol shooter

If you wear a glove smaller than large then you might have better luck with the VP9. The Canik trigger is pretty far out there for a striker fired pistol and I found that the overhang on the back bashed my thumb knuckle when my finger was placed properly on the trigger.

The measurement from my thumb web to the tip of my finger is 3.5” for reference.

I can't comment on on the Canik as I have only dry-fired it a few times.

I have the SFP9/VP9 (I guess the V1 as we would call it) that I compete with for IDPA.

Pro:
Customizable grip panels, backstrap, etc.
Very comfortable grip.
Controls are accessible and easy to activate, e.g. mag release, slide release, the added "slide charging wings".
The trigger is brilliant for a stock trigger.

Con:
A bit more muzzle flip, for me anyway, than say a Glock 17 or CZ P10F.
Magazines are outrageously expensive and hard to find.
Less holster choice than other striker fired pistols, and if you are left handed, good luck. Thank god for Gray Fox Strategic.
The original grip texture is a bit slippery but if it's not used for competition, not a big deal. It can easily be resolved by Talon grip.

Wow that’s a tough choice! If I were you I would do everything in my power to shoot the SFP, possibly find a rental range that has one? You can’t go wrong with either one, both will do exactly what you want them to do so it’s really going to comedown to which one floats your boat and fits your hand best.

I have 2 canik pistols. I've tried - hard - to find reasons to not like these pistols. Hundreds of rounds and being really nit-picky. The most scathing thing I can say is that the mags don't drop free if you use the ones not specifically for that model without a bit of filing to the internal frame magazine guides.

Caniks are amazing value for the money. Reliable and great features. Sure, they may not have the same aftermarket parts availability, but they don't really need it as they come with a great “out of the box” set of features.

comparing a canik to a HK is like comparing a Honda Civic to an Audi.... the build quality,... HK is HK...a canik will never come close.

For me nothing is better than a good 1911 for trigger and pointability.
I have a few HK's including the HK45 and I love it.
I just purchased the HK SFP9L-OR-PB. It should be here on Tuesday along with a Trijicon RMR.
I really would have liked to find one without the push button but nobody as far as I know has sold any in Canada.
It's a little pricier than an HK45 though.

Im a 1911 fan as well. Ill likely buy the hk45 myself later in the year. Was wanting a 9mm for a bday gift
I think im going to wait till covid relaxes a bit and i can go feel each sxs in person

I followed and researched the Canik for years before I pulled the trigger and got my TP9SA. Extremely well worth the money Imho. I have many different makes and this one is fantastic. The trigger is incredible right out of the box. Being we are all different , it will be up to you to see what fits you best. But definitely give it a great look. Since I bought mine, they have come out with several more models which are even nicer than mine.

Haven't shot it yet but got my canik today. Pretty impressed with the trigger. Only thing the tp9 mod 2 is pretty large, kinda wish is was a little more compact.
