Hi Guys,

I've been thinking about my next gun. I've always wanted a HK Mk23, but I don't have huge hands. I've fired a Desert Eagle and it's really too big for my hands. I guess a Mk23 would be the same. So the next best thing is a USP tactical (but in 40 S&W to be a little cheaper to feed). If you've shot one what did you think?

It shoots like a normal usp. Different sights, base gun is very similar to a FS with a slightly nicer trigger. You can get a usp tactical in 9mm just so you know, so that cheaper to feed for 40, you can do better.

Same as above. The frame size is the same between standard USP and Tactical. Frame sizes are slightly different betwteen 9/.40 (being the same) and .45 (slightly different than 9/.40).

The Custom Sport model has all the same features as the Tactical (although there are some Custom Sports without a threaded barrel).

I'd also recommend trying how the HK45 feels versus the USP. You may prefer it. Same internals but he HK45/P30 series has upgraded ergonomics and external features.

what are the best places to get an HK?

i'm in toronto, so to me that would mean places with the items in stock, so I could try them in my hand.

.... on the other hand, price-wise, where's good- or does it matter? thanks!

IMO you should have take a serious look at the HK45.

Ergonomics are pretty much as good as it'll get; You can switch backstraps for a better size of your palm.

And no, I'm not just saying that because I have one for sale in the EE

I've owned two HK45s and I really wanted to like them but even though they're more comfortable to hold than a USP I didn't enjoy shooting them--I think I'm in the minority here though. The USP Tactical (in .45 at least) has the o-ring barrel, H&Ks match trigger and nice target sights. The USP Expert has similar features but longer slide (and correspondingly longer sight radius) and no threaded barrel--it's my favourite USP model.

FWIW I just picked up a Mark 23 and even though I've got small hands it's manageable for me. It's not that much bigger than other full-size double stacked semi-autos; single-action trigger reach is fine, but the DA reach is about as long as I can manage.

The USP vs. HK/P30-series thing is really a personal preference.

In 9mm I really like my USP's and ended up selling my P30L. This is probably because I've been shooting the USP for so long and am really used to the feel. But in .45 I really like the HK45 and kept it. I still have a USP in .45 that feels a heck of a lot like the 9mm, but the HK45 was just so good I had to keep it. It may seem strange because they are so similar, but I didn't have the same level of comfort with the P30L. Each will be different.

The good thing is there are different external options that most tastes should be satisfied by at least one. And the internals, therefore accuracy and reliability, are the same.

I owned a Mark 23. Although it is physically a large pistol, the grip size, trigger pull is almost the same as the USP grip. I have average sized hands and I had no issues shooting it, or the DE .44 Mag I owned at the same time.

I am like several other members above. I purchased a HK45 about 2 years ago to add to my Mark 23 and USP .45. I found I preferred the 'block like' grip 'feel' of the Mark and USP over the sculpted HK45 grip.

I ended up selling the HK45 after a few months as I liked the feel of the USP .45 and I could shoot it as well as, or sometimes better than the HK45. As mentioned above, the HK's share the same internals and are well known for their accurate, soft shooting ability.
I sold the Mark 23 as it became a 'safe queen'.

I own a HK USP Custom Sport, which is on the EE now, mainly because it has also become a 'safe queen', as I have several other 'go to' 9 mm's to shoot, a German made Sig P226 and G17 with custom trigger. The USP Custom Sport is basically a USP Tactical without the threaded barrel end.

Unless you really 'want' a .45 pistol, I would consider a HK USP 9/.40 pistol, as the grip is slightly smaller than the USP .45/Mark 23.
Also, I'm not sure what type of shooting you do, but between a 9 mm and a .40, for the type of shooting I do, I would stay with a 9 mm, as the recoil from a 9mm HK is very soft, plus the 9mm is cheaper to feed, making it easier to practice more.
