does anybody know if you have to buy the HK USP in one of the various variants, or can you take a basic variant 1 and change it into one of the others?

you can do both... IVe got a number 1. Why what variant did you want? I suppose some of the odder ones would just require either a long wait time or a conversion.

in my other post I didn't mention that I was a lefty – so variant 2 with the safety/decocker on the righ is pretty appealing to me. I'd heard about all these different variants, but I wasn't sure if they came from the factory like that, or if you just get the basic model and either change it yourself or at a gunsmith.

have you shot one before? I only ask as some people seem to either love or hate the USP.

I don't have a lot of experience with the USP, but I squeezed off a few rounds on one that was owned by a family friend. My first impression was that it was as solid as a rock, and quite accurate. I had test fired a SIG p226 not long before, and I was pretty bent on getting a SIG before trying the USP. I really like them both for different reasons, but the different variants that the USP comes in made my mind up for me –*that and the price they're available for right now.

yeah as long as you have tried it, you got no worries.. Which one are you getting?

I think I'll probably go with the USP –*but it's a tough choice – they're both fine pistols. It's just that the USP is bit more lefty-friendly, and with the stainless slide, a bit prettier.

you can get the P226 with a stainless slide too or all stainless ;) I love the HK myself but will probably buy the P226 all stainless for my first hand gun. Tried a glock, and after having it jam 3 times in 10 shots i will never own one. I know this isnt the norm but that it failed for me put me off it. I bet you'll be happy with the HK....It will be my 2nd Hand gun :)

I have a variant 3. I also just sold a LEM DAO variant.
It is an $11 part to switch from V1 to V3.

I just bought a USP45 in varaint one(I'm a lefty), I don't know for sure but I think the change over to the other variants is done at the dealer level. That said the control lever is a $40 dollar part , I received instructions to change it over, but they suggest a HK Armourer. The LEM is another varaint that requires the LEM trigger group, this I am told is definitly a Armouers job. Hope this helps. Check out HKPRO for all the answers to your questions. BTW I switched from the SIG P220 to the USP, I needed a "double stack" since I have big hands.

Most of the varients are part swaps... But some of the swaps require work

Variant 1 DA/SA with control lever (safety/decocking lever) on left Variant 2 DA/SA with control lever (safety/decocking lever) on right Variant 3 DA/SA with control lever (decocking lever) on left
Variant 4 DA/SA with control lever (decocking lever) on right
Variant 5 DAO with control lever (safety lever) on left
Variant 6 DAO with control lever (safety lever) on right
Variant 7 DAO with no control lever
Variant 9 DA/SA with control lever (safety lever) on left
Variant 10 DA/SA with control lever (safety lever) on right

The hardest work would be the LEM conversion. IT can be done but proper tools like a set of different sized tweezers and roll punchs like the ones found at princess auto are needed. Some of the parts are very small. The Variant changes are not hard at all. Changing from a righty to an ambi dextrous usp control lever would not be hard, I have seen the parts involved and it is not different than removing the hammer axle and said parts and replacing with the ambi piece. More patience is required than anything.
Cals sporting armoury in the usa have lots of parts listed under the pistol accessories section; under Heckler and Koch section you will find a V3 V4 detent plate, as well as ambi control lever.

I mentioned the same thing in another post, but I just threw down the plastic for a USP stainless 9x19 this morning (told work I had a doctors appointment). Being a lefty, the gunsmith at Italian Sporting Goods (the place I bought it) said they could switch the safety/decocker to the right no problem. Can't wait to get it back in my hands.

see my other reply. good pistol, reliable accurate. Change it to a V3 (no safety, decocker only) with a $11 dollar part.

A V3 has no safety, the DA/SA stays the same. The lever ONLY decocks. IN production this is usefull, as you only have to decock for DA first shot. I decided to get rid of the external safety, as I accidentally engaged it at a match.

This was great to find this thread so quickly - I just joined the forum to find out if anyone was looking at an HK USP stainless. I'm in Ottawa and just found one and had a hard time giving it back to the clerk. I wanted to check on the IPSC rules (which I'm also new to) as I had heard that you needed the double action for the first shot. So from reading I gather that version 1 would be 'Production' legal? Anyone have any good pictures to post, I want something for my windows background ;)
