Mostly a LF re-post -- but I took some pic at the range - and have a few more on buddies cameras that will come up later.
Recently BigRed went on leave and left me a new toy to play with.
I bigged some of the guys here who have experience with it - and have been trying to negotiate with BigRed for a permament loan
I had seen the mythical beast previous - having gotten a short fam fire with it in the early 90's at Connaught, and had seen the Greek Cypriot SF with its younger brother the Hk23 while in Cyprus.
Whats not to like about a closed bolt, belt fed 7.62 gun? Its not GPMG - but it does have a QCB - and there is a LW (and Short) Para barrel for it - and currently negotiating for one. Its about 16lbs -- so about 4lbs less than my carbine

I am awaiting Aimpoints new machine gun optic - the T-1 Micro on the Matech BIS base which will give you adjustment out to 600m - as while the Short Dot is an excellent tool - I have one on my carbine -- and for most urban usage of this gun as a dismount support weapon the smaller (and lighter) CCO will be advantageous.
Magpul is currently working a stock for this one (several like its unique abilties - so its not just a KevinB niche market ) -- and I am trying to figure out a ligth mount for it so I can add a vis light.
It takes both the US (NATO) disintegrating link belt - and the german (RPD/PKM like) non disintergrating belt -- I run a short teaser belt in the car (we have M240's that use it as well) and I got a german fixed belt in my buggout bag, plus our 240 ammo bags.
Frankly I never used to see the use of something like this -- but I've been wrong before and I was with this bad boy.

That'll leave a mark.

What application would it have in Iraq? I know it seems like a dumb question, but in what situations would you take it over, say, the old M4?

How does it handle with short bursts (recoil; ability to stay on tgt)?
Being so light in weight, does it "bounce" when fired using the bipod (like the C2 did)?
 
It does not really bounce but the cyclic is a little high book value is 800 -- but this one is really close to the MG3 @ 1200
-- I shot a bit of auto standing and at 35m could keep the first few rounds on the tgt -- and then bring it down and traverse across on 10-15 rds burst.

I used it on some dismount peelback stuff and just ran it auto - as our 240 did not dismount, was very easily able to hammer short 3-5 rds bursts into tgt';s while withdrawing and then go firm and lay waste.

The drill on the A1 is to #### it and lock it open -- pull the feed tray open (depress the feedtray lock first) - drop the belt on (upside down from the C6/M240) lock the feedtray closed - and drop the bolt.

BBL change - is lock it open - and press the bbl lock (on the bbl) and rotated it and then push pull it out.


As for the role -- its a SAW/DM gun, plus an excellent dismount gun for tearing stuff up if your in an urban ambush.

Hi Kev,

Does the HK21 come with any sort of box/ammo bag to carry the rounds? Seems kinda bulky letting the ammo hang like that.

Has SIG/Swiss Arms come up with any reasons for the continued failures of the 552 in that manner? I've got a CQB, which I know, isn't exactly the same thing as a 552, and I love my PE90s. Both models display exceptional craftsmanship and quality. I haven't had a single complaint with either Classic Green & just purchased another (Blue Star). These rash of failures of the SIG 552 seems rather out of character for the quality the SIG is known for. I had thought that this problem had been solved to your company's satisfaction last year. Is it a metallurgical problem or a design problem do you think?
 
Hey Kev, you guys have a need for a Mechanical Engineer? I'd give my left nut to work with half of those toys...

What 7.62 ammo are you running through it?
 
Excellent pictures, but that's a Greek-made HK21! Booooo!

Kampfhamster, care to elaborate on the 552 replacement?
 
The only info I've got is that it'll use the same gas system as the 550, with the spring around the gas piston instead of having it behind the bolt.
