Cool little piece of history I came across, it's a "good" plug for us HK "junkies out there,

Thought you guys might appreciate this so I thought I'd share some pics of the last remaining HK416 that the Asymmetric Warfare Group owns and is currently being worked into a display at the Fort Meade museum.
The backside story is this rifle was carried by an AWG Operational Advisor while on a combat patrol in RC North (Korengal Valley) Afghanistan circa 2007ish. During a combat engagement the rifle was struck by an enemy round (7.62x39) in the upper handguard and ultimately stopping against the operating rod. I don't recall of the rifle was rendered inoperable or not but the bolt is currently locked out of battery and the charging handle is as well. The unit member was unharmed which arguably was a result of the robust rail and over-engineered op rod. Lucky to say the least. Enjoy.

Pretty cool piece of history, I think they should top it off with the NF in similar condition (shot by 7.62 and still serviceable) ;)

I'm not sure I understand whats "cool" about this? The rifle appears to have been rendered non-functional with the bolt stuck partially back.

Had this been a DI rifle, the gas tube may have been damage which would have prevented the rifle functioning properly but it would still have been able to have been worked as a straight pull manual repeater. While not perfect at least still allows the operator to continue to shoot people. Plus 1 for DI operation.

A "regular DI" gun would have exploded into pieces as the HK is made out of adamantium, that's the "cool" part. Sometimes you have to read between the lines bud!! :p or simply "lighten up"

Perhaps you're watching to many Wolverine movies, of course what does this say about me since I recognized what adamantium is...;)

Of course anyone would think HK's are actually made from unobtanium because they are so expensive compared to a premium DI rifle. Plus 2 for DI.

Cheers D

As much as I disagree with Suputin about other things, I have to say that I am with him on this one.

If you look at where the round impacted, and compared that to say an M4A1 with DD RIS II handgusrd, it is likely that not only would the gun have still been functional, but the barrel nut/handguard mount may even have protected the gas tube, and that it would still run as intended.

OK troops relax, it was just an FYI post, not a "test" on which is better DI or piston, Colt or HK or DD,

Yes Suputin is right, so are you, you are all right, just enjoy the pics, and relax, or lets start the debate on which is better DI or piston, Colt or HK etc,

And I'm guessing that again Suputin will be right, and so will you & HK sucks etc.

I'm not interested in which one is better, and quite frankly arguing on this forum is like beating your head into a brick wall most of the time. My comment was meant merely as that, a comment.

The cool factor is obviously the fact the gun was shot at in combat and a piece of history although a small part. Does that really need to be explained? - 1 for DI operation because of the constant childish comparisons. Just reading this constant stupidity makes me wants to put my Colt m4s and other Di AR's placed hidden at the back of my gun safe just because of the never ending harassment of posters representing the DI crowd are embarrassing. Lighten up guys, good god. I never witnessed the supposed invincibility of CC rifles well in the service, they were fantastic guns but the pure dogma and ego's that go with the DI crowd is crazy town.

You disagree with me? On what? And more importantly, why? :)

Mine too. It is a pic of a damaged AR. Not sure what is so cool about that?

I'm not pro or anti HK honestly. People are free to run what they want. I have my reasons for running the system I do. Its just interesting that damage to the gas piston apparently caused the rifle to become completely useless. Never thought of that one before.
