took a friend to the range today to shoot my Sig P226 9mm and the HK45.

he was stellar with the Sig.....but everytime he shot the HK the mag would drop..2 rounds in....6 rounds in...didn't seem to matter.

Never had a mag drop when I'm shooting it. I watched him carefully after the first drop...but I really couldn't see anything obvious he was doing wrong. We took our time the second time around and made sure he was thumb forward on the supporting hand..slow shooting to try and eliminate flinch.....I dunno....he seemed to be doing everything correct..but once again..mag drops.

any ideas ?
 
Being the owner of a HK45 and not being able to watch him shoot, the only thing I can think of his the base of his thumb on his support side is low and catching the mag release as the gun recoils.
 
In my experience with the Teutonic mag releases (HK and Walthers, which happens to be my preferred style), it is either exactly what BLACKBRIAR said but since you said you made sure it wasn't the shooting hand thumb, it is the same thing but on the other side with a finger (probably index or middle) from the support hand sort of hooking down on the mag release. A bit exaggerated in this pic but should demonstrate what I mean. You can see how with a grip like this, when the gun rises in recoil, the finger will press down on the mag release. It might sound crazy but I can tell you from direct experience that it is possible.

PS I have mentioned in other threads how freakishly small my hands are... damn, look at those tiny little sausage fingers. I'm embarrassed.:redface:
 
Super easy way to test if it is the left hand is to get your friend to shoot one handed and see if the mag still drops.

Another way is to not mention the above to him and tell him to take aim but stop him before firing and check where all his fingers are.
 
I agree with Blackbriar.

I owned a HK45 for over a year, I never had an issue with mags dropping, but one of my shooting buddies tried it and somehow he was touching the mag release, the same as your friend seems to be doing.

If the mags do not drop out when you are shooting, then you know it's not a gun issue. It's highly probably your friend is touching the release and releasing the mag during recoil.

As posted above, let him try shooting one handed, if the mag does not drop, then return him to two hand hold, observe how he is holding it, perhaps make some minor adjustments and tell him to focus on his grip positioning for the first few shots.

And yes Sambara.........................................those are some mean "sausage fingers" you've got there! That little Glock looks like a perfect fit though. LMAO ;-)
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys...will definitely get him to try it one handed and see what happens. Like I said it never happens to me....I'm relieved that he's gimped...not the gun ; )
 
Not the gun, I did it 5 times the first couple of times I shot mine. I had to carefully examine how I was positioning myself and I seem to have rectified the issue.

It is embarrassing to say the least :)
