Hmmm need some input on failure

Put my new 16inch dissipator barrel on my new upper and took her out to the range

It seems I have created a Bolt action AR15

The mags were working fine in Lonedrones AR

We swapped his lower for mine so it is not the lower.

It appears that the bolt is not going back all the way.

I am thinking that it is a gas system problem or buffer.

Just grasping at straws before I tear the whole thing down again.

I take it it functioned well on his lower?
Did you try his buffer and spring in your lower?
 
Sorry I had a typo there.........it did not work on his lower so the problem is certainly on my upper

We did not swap out the buffer and springs as I did not even think of that as a problem till i got musing about it.

I am concerned with a plugged as port however. When I got the barrel (new) and looked down it I noted a small "thing" in the barrel.

I swabbed the barrel out and looked again and it was gone.

Hmmmm

I am concerned that it might be from the chrome process? or a burr that I have now pushed over blocking the hole?

I really do not want to have to take the FSB off as I have had ZERO luck with putting in taper pins!!
 
Well it doesn't sound like the buffer if it didn't work on 2 different lowers. I'd go buy some large pipe cleaners, run them through your gas tube. Make sure they're long enough to pass completely through the tube.

What type of ammo? possibly hand loads with an incredibly weak charge? Or was this factory ammo?
 
Oh I may have read your first post incorrectly. Is your casing being ejected? does the action cycle and pick up another round or must you do this manually?
 
Sounds as if it is short recoiling.
Are the gas key screws tight?
Piston rings intact?
Gas tube pin in place?
Gas tube clear?
Gas port and gas block lined up?
Does the upper work with a different carrier group?
Does the carrier group work in a different upper?
Try different ammunition?
 
Start with the simple.

1) Is the gas tube installed correctly, and does it match up with the gas key on the bolt carrier?
2) Is the bolt carrier on tight, and staked in properly?
3) Does the bolt have it's gas rings on properly, and staggered?
4) Does the BCG pick up and extract a round manually?
5) What buffer do you have in the gun. If it's the heavy buffer, try the standard.
 
Just got back from the range from more testing

As ususal you guys are on the right track.

I do believe it is a bolt issue.

The gas tube lines up fine

Here is what I did.....

put in my carbine spring and buffer.

Cycled fine BUT did not go into battery when I dropped the bolt.

So I put in a rifle spring with carbine buffer......things worked 90% of the time.

Took it all apart again and noted that my bolt seems "stiff" but I was out of ammo

Some friendly EESAers showed up and we discussed the problem.

Put his Daniel Defense Bolt in and............bingo. Flawless.

So now to take a look at my bolt after some yard work
