Hodgdon 4895

I recently switched from a regular Mosin 91/30 to a sniper repro
so i am starting to reload now

I also got a Norinco M14b and will definitely reload 308

I also have an sks for whihc i might reload one day

I have plans to get an ar15 style rifle so i might be reloading 223 one day


hodgdon 4895 seems to be the powder in common for all these calibers

do you know where i can find it?

H 4895 and Varget are both made by Hodgdon, so almost any gun store should carry these common powders. Try LeBarons or Higginson Powders.

I'm of the opinion that trying to do all your reloading with one type of powder is an unwise economy. If you sit down to load a bunch of 7.62x51 you're going to use the whole can anyway, so what's the disadvantage of having a specific can for that rifle?

The 4895s are possibly the most popular and common powders in history. They can be found anywhere.

and just remember that there is a difference between H4895 and IMR4895

would these two powders work well in the calibers i mentioned above?
what's the benefit of using a given powder for a given caliber (as in how you choose your powder for the caliber?)

Some powders are known for working better/ more accurately in certain calibres or types of guns and possibly with certain bullet weights. It doesnt mean its an absolute, just some stuff seems to work pretty good for a certain task for many people and may be a good starting point. This is printed in some manuals like Lyman as most accurate powder tested or word of mouth passed on from other shooters. One example might be a lot of people like Varget in bolt action .308 Win. Doesnt mean its the best or only way, but it works quite regularily. As always you will have to try them yourself to see what works best for you, but you dont need to go out and buy a pound of 20 different powders.

You choice of H4895 would be a decent one to try in your calibres. If it doesnt give the best results try some others like Win 748, IMR 4064, Varget etc.. using data in your manual of course.
