so I went to Hodgdon website and went to the recipe for 308 winchester, the recipe called for 130 gr spr hp, but i couldn't find any available, but the closest i can find that's available is
Speer .308 dia 30 cal 110 gr tmj plinker,.

so i went to the Hodgdon data site and found the 110 gr recipe and it recommends 110 gr bar tsx fb instead of Speer 110 gr tmj .. does it make any difference if i use the speer bullet instead of the recommended bullet.

thank you

If you are using a cup and core bullet to match the cup and core bullet then you would be fine to work up a load from the minimum based on weight, but you are using a cup and core bullet in place of a barnes TSX bullet, these are solid copper. These recipes will not work between the 2 different bullet types as the barnes will push deeper into the case for the same overall length, it is a longer bullet being copper rather than lead core. Nosler has load data for a cup and core bullet, you can also email Speer and see what they recommend. I would not use the Barnes data for anything but the Barnes bullet.

OP, the issue you're running into is exactly the reason I use the latest LYMAN reloading manuals.

They usually have loads for the shape and weight of the bullets you want to use, without naming manufacturers. They list appx loads and pressures as per their test barrels or if they're safe in certain older model firearms.

Lyman does have a website. I don't know if it's available without a subscription.

When in doubt, follow Ganderite's advice.

Extrapolating loads between different bullet mfgrs, as long as they are not solid copper bullets, is OK to do, but, you absolutely have to start at min charge weights. For solid copper such as Barnes, Nosler etc., have some older bullets had separate data due to pressure issues, a lot has been done with newer versions, to get them working more in line with cup and cores, but, not all are all the way there yet. And then comes the length vs weight issues. Pay attention to what you buy and the data for that bullet, you can get the odd surprise when intermixing bullet brands and charge data. Sometimes your gun doesn't like the data either, even when using all the same components, and it winds up with different results than expected, that's why you start with min charges.
