hole in gas tube

I brought my skshome from the store today and noticed a small hole through the gas tube does anyone know why that might be there

I just got my SKS today also, i noticed the hole and i am assuming that it be used as an oiling hole to lubricate the piston, or it is simply an air release hole to let out some of the build up when the piston moves rearward.

Its to vent off the gas, do not lube the piston and the gas tube except for long term storage

Don't say that. There are plenty of us who clean and oil the gas piston every time we shoot and it works just peachy. Actually, mine didn't work right until I did.

Thats the first thing to rust up on an SKS, I take mine apart clean it and lube it after every use.

I flush mine with boiling water and wipe it dry, never had rust yet.

Or keep in a really dry place!

I put a light coat of Rem oil on every metal part on all of my rifles. Never an issue. I do make a habit of fully stripping, cleaning and oiling my SKS after every shoot.

The hole is a gas vent hole, as stated. Don't tamper with it. As for oiling the gas system, I don't but I keep the rifle clean at all times. The SKS is super durable and can function in any condition as long as it is cleaned afterwards. The AK is legendary for being able to work no matter what, I suspect the SKS is even better in that regard. I just saw a post in another forum where a guy bought a used one and found that the rifle had been used for 20 years+ with the gas tube full of cosmoline and never disassembled, much less cleaned.

id guess its to release gas so the piston can back into position. seems obvious

seems every rifle is different as well .. mine ejects shells to the left and behind .. never come across this before.. but it is norinco

I believe, Sir, that you were holding it upside-down.

(That, or it's just trying to get on board with the Coriolis effect in your Southern latitude... our drains swirl one way, yours swirl another... our rifles eject one way, yours eject another... )
