Hollow point vs round nose for accuracy?

Got some good back yard range time and gopher time in with the 10/22 (LR) today.

Was shooting the Blazer (CCI) lead nose (40 grain) bulk pack, getting some nice 2.5-3" diameter 10 rounds groups at about 50 yards. Not a single flier.

Then tried some of the Canadian tire federal bulk packs (36 grain hollow point copper (plated?))
Now it was like 3.5 to 4" groups of 10, with some fliers in every clip.
Same results with the Winchester bulk pack (333 rounds) 36 grain hollow point (copper plated?).

Then tried a little box of wildcats (40 grain lead nose) and found that they were close to the Blazer's, but still not as good.

So, i was under the impression that hollow points were said to be more accurate, was I wrong?

I did notice that the gophers would have to eat 2 or 3 lead round nose before they would stop twitching, would a hollow point make this a faster job?

What could I expect from some copper round nose 22 shells?

300+ rounds shot? Not a single miss fire or feeding issue.
But I can see lead built up on the outside of the end of the barrel!!!
I guess I got some good brush work for tonight.

2.6 to 3" at 50 sounds like something is bad wrong. mine is under 1.5 at 100y except when the odd flyer comes out (factory target model)and all my shooting pals get 2-3 with the sporters at 100, all we use is american eagle round nose, I find the hp's aren't as accurate.

Wow, I thought I was doing good too LOL

The rifling looks good, everything feels good on it.
Was part of my step grandfathers collection, so its 20+ years old but in great condition.

Now I was only resting off the box on the back of the quad, but it was set up properly, good stance, and I was pretty steady also. So i would not fault my set up too much.

Any idea what to look for or do to bring the accuracy in?

Accuracy

Are you using scope or open sights? That could make a big difference. Also, have you tried shooting from a bench rest? As far as ammo goes, you should try as many different ones as you can get your hands on. What works great in another rifle same model as yours may not work at all in yours. For instance, in my Norinco, all Winchesters do best, beating even the Eley match stuff. In my son's CZ, the best we've found is Remmy subsonic. Doesn't shoot worth a crap out of mine, though.

As far as HP vs. solid nose, the HP will definitely do a gopher in faster. it's a lot more destructive. The old-timers I know that used .22's on moose used a standard velocity solid lead bullet, though.

First question to ask is are you using a scope? Second is the barrel clean? Third is are you using the facory trigger group?

At 50m even with the Blaser, and a basic scoped 10/22 I would be pissed with anything over 2 inches thats for sure. I have a Target tactical model, and it makes under 1 inch groups at 50m after I run a mag through her to warm the barrel up! 2 inches with the Blazer at 100m is about as good as I can do! Those groups shrink a bit, with some match ammo like Eley.

If you are using the factory gun, I would recommend going to rimfiresports.com and getting a Volquartsen Target Hammer! It will drop that trigger pull way down to about half what it is now for about $30! Still really mushy, but alot lighter. This made a huge difference for me.

My Mossberg 144 really likes Win. Dynapoints and T-22 plus Eley Tenex but way too expensive, Blazers also shot pretty good in this rifle

Thats because a hollow point expands and would not penetrate to hit the vitals! This is the same reason you want hollow points for small game. You are not concerned with penetration on the thin skinned small game, but you want the bullet to expand to kill quickly.

Last time me went out my friend picked up a brick of blazer, theres too many whiz bangs for me. I use my atv some times for a rest but its not as good as sandbags or even prone on a pack pack. Also I have never noticed any difference of expansion in .22lr between hp and solid. I think between the low velocity and hard lead theres not much expansion at all, infact I have found dozens of fatality causing bullets and I cant remember ever finding one with any damage period other than little dents and such from bone or hitting a rock after passing through. Zero expansion in water.. I think its like hp .177 pellets in a 490fps pellet gun, increase velocity a bit but thats about it.

Yes, scoped.
Barrel was cleaned prior to shooting, but all in all those groups were the same from the start. Gopher shooting was after target shooting.
Gun has seen minimal usage for at least 20 years (when step grandfather passed away it was just stored in my parents basement).
So im assuming all factory parts.
