When I picked my Remington 597 HB and grabbed some ammo, the guy told me that hollow points weren't good for semi autos. I have tried googling why of course and I haven't found anything.

It's not a big deal, it's just made me curious. Can anybody offer their experience or info about this?

He's full of it.As long as the bullet nose profile is semi-round they should feed fine .Some don't like Remington Yellow Jackets as the flat truncated cone nose is not streamlined .Square peg..........round hole.Harold

Hollow points are only a problem if you have a steep feed ramp, a truncated cone/ semi wadcutter type bullet or a wide hollow point cavity that has sharp edges or any combination of the 3. Usually in handguns.
With the newer HP designs that have a FMJ profile, it's not as likely a problem.

that's weird, I just took for granted that he knew what he was saying because he talked me out of spending more money.

Thanks for your reply's, I will give them a try when I pick up more ammo.

Yeah not sure where he got that from but I've never had problems with any semi I've owned shooting hp ammo. I stick with CCI ammo myself. Mini mag hp have always been reliable and accurate in any of my 22s.

I have also had problems feeding the Remington Yellow Jacket HP rounds in my semis, though never in a bolt action. Like colonel3006, I love the CCI ammo with Federal being a close second on my reliability scale. HP or solids, the CCI ammo has never failed me.

Not a 597, but my savabe 64f wont feed the Winchester 555 and turns into a "bolt action" with it but no problems with other HP like golden bullets, American Eagle or CCI.

Like any semi auto 22lr, buy a bunch of ammo to try and find the one the rifle likes then buy boxes of it

I have a marlin m60 and gf has a custom 10/22 and a browning pistol. They all shoot win 222/333/555, cci mini mag, cci sub sonic hp, american eagle hp just fine.

Only issue ive had is GSG15 & 1911 which only cycle HV and hate Remington ammo all thunderbolt or golden which stick in the chamber my other guns shoot anything. Some groups better than others try lots buy bulk in what shoots well. If your not budgetting CCI has the best quality semi premium price point right now in my limited exp.

My experience with a 10/22 has CCI MiniMags RN shooting 2" at 100 yards and the HP's running to just over 6".
Didn't have to tell me twice what it didn't like. Using them up in Speed Steel.

Gun stores are notorious for mis-information like this because people tend to either b!tch or bullsh!t, so reality gets distorted. IE: Some guy bought a SA rifle and some HP ammo, had problems with said ammo in said rifle, becomes all SA rifles have problems with that ammo. You did right doing your own research.
