Hollowpointing Frontier 110RN's

I've got a nice supply of frontier 30 caliber 110RN's - copper plated. I want to take some of these loads while I big game hunt in case I run across a grouse. But in BC we can't hunt with FMJ so I've started experimenting with hollowpointing a few of these...

Simple technique...
a) drill 30 caliber hole in my work bench and insert bullet
b) file the top of the bullet off
c) drill a tiny hole in the middle

Keep in mind, this is a small scale operation. Like 10 at a time...

I load these in my 30-06 behind 11 grains of Unique. I have yet to shoot them like this - any thoughts?

I use Hornady's 100 gr SJ bullets for just that purpose. While I am sure that what you are doing will work on grouse, I don't think that that method will assist with expansion should you try varmints. The jacket is designed NOT to frange. However, striking a grouse with any such round will pretty much do the trick.
What are you using for a big game round? My basic procedure for doing what you are doing is to sight my rifle in for the game and conditions I am mainly hunting and then build my lighter round so that it has the same POI only at a shorter range. That way, I am not field adjusting or trying to dope out a POI using Kentucky windage.
That point being considered, I would suggest that you sight your rifle in for whatever you are chasing. Then, build the lighter round to impact where the crosshairs are already centred, but instead of 200yds, have it land there at 25-50yds. Normally, I have no problems achieving this from my .30-06 or my .308. Off hand, I think I am using 20 or 22 gr of WC785 in my .30-06, and 12-15 in my .308 to get that to work for me.

Yeah - these run about 1200fps, and I actually don't care if they don't expand. I may skip the hole. Basically just trying to appease the CO should he check my ammo pouch... I have no doubt that one of these running at 1200 would dispatch a grouse even if it doesn't expand.

Regarding load development - that's exactly what I am planning to do. Tweak the load until I get the poi I want. May even use trail boss to tighten up groups.

Can you legaly take upland game with a centerfire rifle in BC . In Sask .22 rimfire is max .You may want check that out first before telling a Co. ( Fish cop ) that is there intended purpose . Personaly I would stick with say, rabbits , in case one should attack ! just my two cents worth.

Yes you can, but Grouse and Ptarmigan only.
 
Maybe the peeling copper plating would act like pellets on the grouse:D:D
Seriously tho, I would think that a plated bullet would have problems once the surface is compromised, as I have seen them peel with pistols. The sound created by the copper going in one direction and the core flopping make a pretty interesting effect.

Making HP ammo out of PLATED bullets is not so smart or safe idea. Especially at rifle velocities.

You may get copper jacket or big chunk of it left in the barrel and next shot may not please you and those around you very much...
 
I'd just load them up as they come and keep them in your pocket. Normally I wouldn't suggest playing loose with a game law, but the law is somewhat silly in this case.:D
 
absolutely correct cmj or tmj depending on who says - but seems to be inviting trouble especially with one particular CO around here who goes off at the drop of a hat. Rather just file off the front plating so there's no question in anyone's mind.
 
Please reduce the size of your pictures.
"...experimenting with hollowpointing..." Plated bullets are not FMJ's. They're electroplated cast bullets. It doesn't work with real jacketed bullets either.

Oops - missed this post. Hmmm... I have a muzzle break on my current -06 too. Jackets flying off in there would make an awful mess. Ok, I give. I ain't gonna try shooting 'em that way (in this rifle anyways).

And Gatehouse, as to crazy game laws... I'd love to be able to use these loads on a turkey if I see one while bear hunting but I can't do that either.

Sorry, just got me a nice widescreen and thought them there pitures was just nicely magnyfied... will try to do better next time, sonny.
