I'm looking to pick up on a Holo sight for my VZ58 (7.62x39), but I'm also hoping to be able to add a magnifier to the set up later. The obvious choice for this instance would be an EOTech, however the limited space on the dust cover mount I bought combined with the fact that my wallet is no where's deep enough, and my unwillingness, to spend $400+ on an EOTech eliminates that option.

I've been looking heavily into the Sightmark Ultra Shot PRO and M-Spec's as they are supposed to have the flat glass like an EOTech or Aimpoint, they're also small enough that I should be able to easily fit it and a 3X magnifier on the dust cover behind it if I want.

I was reading that if you're looking to put a magnifier behind a holo sight you need to look for a sight with 'flat glass' to reduce or eliminate distortion of the reticule. Is there any truth to this? Is distortion just going to be a thing?

The rifle is primarily a range 'toy', however it may see some Coyote action next fall, and more than likely gophers this spring. So if there are any other recommendations for a ~$200 semi compact reflex/holo sight I'd be open to opinions, I know the TRS 25 is popular as well and I will be researching that a bit more too. I was able to physically take a look at an Ultra Shot Pro, and the glass appeared curved to my eye, but I didn't really see any distortion looking at the reticule through a magnifier...

Also, apologies if someone has a thread on this already, I was unable to locate it. My google-fu is also either weak or there just isn't too much out there on this subject.

I took a look at the Vortex Sparc II yesterday and I'm not sure that I like the 'tube' style red dots. The FoV is so restricted I might as well just throw a scope on it. It also brought up space concerns, keeping in mind that I only have about 6" of rail to mount both a sight and magnifier (if I decide to go with one) on.

subscribing. also looking for a reflex CX4 Carbine in 9mm.

I had a Sightmark Ultrashot before(not the pro) and it was ok. It didn't seem to hold zero on my AR-15. not sure if that was the mounting or me or the sight. It also had an issue with the battery cover working loose over time. I did seem to fix that with a little bit of oil on the threads so it would tighten down better. This was an older model, maybe they have fixed that?

I once bought a Sightmark 3X multiplier to use with my Eotech. For $100, the image quality was very good...right up until the front glass lens disintegrated which happened after about 100 rounds of .223. I tried to get warranty on it but because I bought it in USA, they insisted that I had to take it back to USA for the claim. For a $100 item, it isn't worth my headache. I will never buy a Sightmark product ever again. Buy once, cry once...

My recommendation, stay away from chit like Sightmark. I put them into the same garbage bin category as NCStar. Total junk and unsupported.

I wouldn't put them in the same category as NcStar at all, or even the ones slightly up from that. They are just more solid overall. As for support, they have great support if you buy in Canada. Talked to many people who have had to return them and its always easy and quick. Now, that said, maybe they need to work on making them need support less, that would be great, but the support has been stellar from what I can find, besides your cross border issue anyway.

I am looking for something exactly like the one I had, but maybe improved in the battery door, and possibly in holding zero. Perfect looks, perfect size, perfect co-witness(at least on my particular AR and sights), good options on reticle, decent brightness adjustablility, easy access to battery.
