I am trying to decide on an optic solution for my poly tech m305 (chicom m-14 clone) in win 308. I will be using this gun from 20 yards to 250 yards. I will be using this as my go to gun for:

Beavers at 20-80 yards moving target
Coyotes 20 - 200 yards moving target
Stalk hunting deer 50- 200 yards
Push hunting deer 0 -200 yards possible close in moving target
Stand hunting bear 30-80 yards

Road hunting, Moose, elk and bears in the field or any longer range work I will use a 300win mag

My M14 is bone stock at the moment but can shoot 1.5 moa with the crap open sights. Optics should close up the groups to 1.25 -1 moa I think. If not this is still acceptable for what I am doing.

SO with all the details out of the way I am thinking a holo sight with a flip over 3-4x magnifier may be a better solution than a standard scope for quick target acquisition on multiple moving targets such as a close in valley deer push and yotes. However I don't have ANY practical experience with these types of sights other than what I have read.

So any advice from hunters with working knowledge of these types of optics would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer to try to learn from others instead of wasting money and these systems ain't cheap.

PS I understand I am totally unethical and chicom guns are only good for using as a club :p

I forgot, How does a holo sight with a magnifier compare to a standard 30mm 22 scope in very low light conditions? I assume it is poor as compared to a 40mm objective.

I have a tendecy to hunt water rodents to the edge of legal hunting time from bush cover.

OOPS I MEANT TO PUT THIS IN THE HUNTING FORUM FEEL FREE TO MOVE IF NESSICARY

I have hunted extensively my M14s with just about every imaginable optic configuration. I think that proper cheek weld is important, and as such it limits your options somewhat. See the following thread for my thoughts on what I believe to be the optimum solution to what you're driving at:

The aimpoint M3 2MOA on an Ultimak rail is what I would use for your application. Forget about the magnifier....either commit to a scout scope or stay with an un-magnified aimpoint. A magnifier will make your rig way too heavy and it is awkwards to use.

Cheers, and good luck!

I find the FTS on my 3x w/ aimpoint very easy to use, and fast. 3x w/ mount probably weighs 1/4 kg, 200g for the optic.

Thanks

I don't have the greatest eye sight so a coyote out at 150 is to far. Beavers can be a problem target as well. Both the coyote and beavers shots are from a stationary setup.
Basically I am trying to have my cake and eat it to. A multi purpose setup for all short and intermediate ranges with fast moving target acquisition, intermediate accurate range and decent low light ability.

I have 0 military experience but I was under the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that a red dot holo sight with a magnifier was designed for what I want to do.
Flip the magnifier over in close for a dear flush and close coyote kills then flip it back for longer range or smaller targets.

Close in moving targets are not well suited to a standard hunting or scout scope. Ask how I know , 60 yard miss on a very nice buck.

What if I did this using a troy battlerail :dancingbanana:

Everyone loves beaver hunting.

A halo sight which is magnified will end up with quite a large dot, maybe a couple of MOA at 100m.

If it was me I would go with a low powered scope like the nikon africa 1-4.

Ok just get a fixed 4 power and be done with it. From from 4 to 400m.

leupold tactical prismatic 1x on an arms 18 or troy battle rail , simply deadly for anything inside 100 yards....... but hard to get the mitts on one.
For a scout type optic/mount setup, I'd trust Brobee's advice without hesitation in this department, his quest for the perfect scout set up was lots of interesting readin a while back ;)
