It pretty much comes down to what you like the looks of. Some of my own preferences are that the gun butt rides midway between my wrist and my elbow on a strong side carry, I prefer an open muzzle, I prefer a holster which can be carried either strong side or cross draw, and after dropping a number of guns, I've decided that I no longer believe holster manufacturers who claim that their holster has enough tension to retain the gun. All of my holsters now, except one, use a cross strap or thumb break. I think the belt should be a minimum of 1.75" wide, and the heavier the gun the wider the belt should be to prevent the belt from rolling over.
I like leather better than synthetics, but good leather is expensive. Google "Simply Rugged". Rob Leahy in Alaska makes a great belt and holster - if you like a no nonsense plain good quality outfit. I own a pair of his holsters, and I've never seen better.
