Recently bought a real nice s&w 586 with 6 inch barrel off EE. Would like to get a holster for it so when i am changing targets etc at the range i don't have to lay it on the ground. I'm not talking quick draw mcgraw here just a convenient holder on my belt for it.My only concern is i don't want to damage the bluing any more than necessary and am wondering if any one has a recommendation for this gun holster. Thanks in advance.

I'll say Blade-Tech's Classic OWB. Your particular firearm is less common, so it isn't in their website's pull-down menu, but if you contact Blade-Tech directly they'll be able to fix you up.

And you can't go wrong with a Classic OWB.

The next nine guys will probably say Solely Canadian.

You may have an issue with using a holster at your range. I do believe it is against range rules to holster your firearm once their is a cease fire. You must clear your firearm and leave breech open, mag out pointed dowm range.

you can if you have your black badge however i do not know if you can walk downrange with it

It depends on the range and range rules. We allow holstered handguns on our range property as long as it’s only loaded on the firing line. No BB needed.
And OP, holster any gun in any type of holster frequently enough and you will eventually see holster wear.

If it's just to carry and not for sport shooting that involves draw and fire, I'd go with a soft nylon holster from Ebay or Amazon. Cheaper, it would also be easier on the finish than kydex.

That would depend on the range. If I'm at our (isolated) range by myself I always feel a little funny leaving my pistol (and ammo) on a bench while I walk 25 yards away

Until it falls out onto the concrete. (Concrete can be hard on a firearm's finish.)

At that moment, you'll wish that you had chosen a better holster.

No, I disagree.....The type of nylon holster I have (for my Browning Buck Mark) has a thumb break retention strap and a soft fabric lining. Useless for fast access or US type carry but would be perfectly suitable for what the OP wants it for......basically "hip storage" that won't scratch the finish....gun is secure and can't fall out.

Amazon or Ebay has tons of examples for various pistols and revolvers ...usually around $25-30
