Hey guys, I am curious, im looking to get into IPSC and ODPL type shooting and im looking for a place to start. I know I need to take a Black Badge course before I can sign up for a match but do I also need to be holster qualified before I sign up for a black badge course? and if so, where can I find a listing of when and where a course would be offered? I've tried sending a few emails to some people in my club but I haven't received any response as of yet

thanks alot

Last I checked, doing the Black Badge course teaches you how to use a holster. At least over here, not sure if Ontario ranges would have a separate holster course.

Black Badge is the entry level course, no requirements other than the applicable equipment.

At my range in BC, the Black Badge is equivalent to holster qualified. My range provides holster course for those who doesn't have Black Badge and want to use the lower range with holster.

After seeing what the holster course entails at the club you are talking about GarDian I would always advise people who want to do more thank plink to take the extra time to do the Black Badge. You learn some skill as opposed to just learning procedure and safety.

I would advise doing some practice at home with your holster and unloaded pistol before the Black Badge course though if you're a new firearm owner. The Black Badge isn't too advanced, but it does expect you to have a basic ability to draw and reholster without shooting yourself in the foot. Finger always well outside the trigger guard and do everything slowly and you'll be fine.

I would advise the oposite, less of a chance that you will develop bad habits that the instructors will have to try to undo. Just work on your safety and shooting basics.

You need to be a reasonable shooter with your gun up to 20 meters with either hand and both hands. If you can not hit 8x10 paper 95% of the time, then you better practice. Other than that, leave it to the instructor to teach you proper methods of holster use. As Pat posted, contact IPSC.

If you are using a DA pistol, work on shooting groups and shooting quick shots with the DA and hit the same size target, 8.5"x11" @ 20m is good. Much more worthwhile practice to get ready for the BB course.

I totally agree with Mr Clean. Let the instructor teach you proper holster technique. The hardest job the instructor has is to break bad/unsafe habits and can lead to frustration on your part.
