Hi all,

In the process of joining a club, still have to target practice, thereafter going to be joining ipsc. Wondering what everyone's holster preference is, please be brand and model specific.

Very little knowledge on my part, but, from what I've read, I'm leaning toward blade tech. Also I've noticed blackhawk and comp tac holsters seem to be popular in the south. I'm not set on kydex, if you have leather or synthetic preference please advise.

The holster is for a sig p229 9mm, railed, iron sights, sig and sig tac holsters are part of the group of holsters I'm looking at as we'll.

Thanks in advance,

RM

Well this thread has been discussed a few times before so you can always do a search and see what has been said and I have no doubt your thread is quickly going to degenerate into advice like buy what you like and can afford but whatever you do don't buy a Blackhawk Serpa cause they are not safe, your going to shoot yourself or someone else ..... Blah blah blah.....

That being said I own and shoot a 226 and use a Serpa for 3 Gun, ODPL and IPSC shoots, although have not shot IPSC in the last year as I enjoy the other disciplines more. I also have a nice Alessi leather holster for a 229 but I prefer the draw on the Serpa for competition, but leather is nice and classy.

Whatever you buy how fast and competitive you are speed wise is largely dependent on practice with your kit, not the kit itself.

I await the Serpa rants ......

Never read about inherent dangers on Blackhawks, have seen posts about failing to release pistols through internal holster lock. Don't think they're even carried in Canadian gun shops, see them on u.s. online shops only. Comp tac seems to have good reviews, again don't think they're readily available north of the border.

Thanks for the link.

Blade Tech are good - and Solely Canadian are excellent, as are Raven Concealment. Apart from the lock issue with Serpas (and incidentally I own one and have removed the lock feature) they wear quickly compared to the others and the materials used are pretty cheap. Not everyone with a Serpa shoots themselves because of it, but many have, and why risk it, it's not that they're that much cheaper than a reliable holster that doesn't have that issue. Additionally, if you plan on taking any courses, many (most) instructors won't allow you to use the Serpa anyway - and I'd recommend taking a course or two as the most cost effective way to improve your skills and abilities.

... thereafter going to be joining ipsc.

If you're going to be gaming with your pistol, then it's hard to beat the bladetech dropped offset kydex holster out of the gate. They're tough, and they work very well. Legal for IPSC and IDPA. If you really get into IPSC, you might get a dedicated race holster down the road (but you'd probably change your competition pistol by then anyway).

If you have the option, it is always best to test fit your particular pistol with a particular holster. Many kydex holsters are semi-custom fit, and have slight differences in how they fit.

If your 229 has an extended barrel to make it restricted instead of prohib, you'll need an open-bottom holster or be willing to cut the bottom of your new holster to accommodate the barrel.

Do a google search on SERPA holsters and decide if you want that feature or not. That will limit your options.

I have a Serpa, a Fobus, and one by Solely Canadian. I should add that I'm a lefty, and there are much fewer options available (and in stock!).

I use the Serpa for CQB and days when I'm doing range instruction (chamber is always cold). I have never had or seen an incident with a Serpa, but when in a hurry...

Fobus is an OK option, but not great retention.

The pancake from Solely Canadian is my go-to holster, good retention, easy to use, very adjustable.

Bladetech is best for IPSC.

I have a comp tac paddle holster for a glock 34 that I use for IDPA. I Really like it. I do believe they have a model that you can use with the drop and offset or just tight to your belt. The fit to the gun is very good .

Bladetech. No complaints whatsoever. Can draw smoothly and never had any problems with gun coming loose, etc.

Great info., thanks. In terms of models my confusion begins. Blade tech's got these models i'm interested in, they're all outside waist band. OWB model(that's the name on their website), black ice, revolution. Which of the three do you's prefer and why?

Thanks a million

I prefer the regular OWB model. Revolution is cheap molded plastic, less durable, harder on your pistol's finish, sloppier fit. Black Ice has a cutout on the front that will reduce draw times by a very, very small amount.

DOH, dropped offset holster.

So...if I pick up the regular outside waistband holster(not revolution or black ice), will I be able to add the doh(dropped offset holster) attachment later, or do I have to buy that specific model now? Not getting much useful info. off their website. The doh looks like something I'd be interested in, but I won't know until I try.

Thanks again,
RM

I have never liked kydex, leather holster for every day range wear works for me. Going tactical on the other hand, I wore a Blackhawk Serpa Lvl 2 for 9 months in Afghanistan for my browning 9mm.

As mrclean says, getting the DOH version lets you run it both ways. Recommend you get it right out of the gate, as most people seem to prefer it. Yes, you can the DOH attachment by itself, but it's more expensive that way and the part can be hard to find.

FWIW, I've had good results emailing Bladetech with questions.
