Holster set up for novice

get yourself a good sturdy belt with an inner and outer belt. id go for double alpha or cr speed. blade tech holsters are good for the money. double alpha makes a great holster (pdr pro) that isn't a "race holster" but have nearly unlimited adjustment.

if you are not in law enforcement or some kind of "operator" id sstay away from a holster with any external retention devices.

nothing intrinsically wrong with a serpa. a lot of people feel they are not safe, but then again if you have a habit of putting your finger inside the trigger guard before you are on target you probably shouldn't have a gun in your hands anwyays.

The International Holster is not legal for IDPA. Comp-Tac has several belt holsters that are. If you are going to play both sports go with a Blade Tech or Comp Tac belt holster with no drop and offset. The speed difference is negligible and it will be some time before the draw speed impacts significantly on your score. They are called shooting sports for a reason.

Do not buy a Serpa holster. The design is dangerous to use for most and there frankly is no need to expose yourself to serious injury playing a sport for fun. Your ego and testosterone levels don't need the exercise.

I'll also add you are better off buying a M&P Competition Kit in 9MM. Ammo is less expensive by far and you get a holster and double mag pouch with the gun. The M&P 9MM will serve you well in IPSC and IDPA for quite some time. You just don't need expensive equipment to get started in either of the two games. Nothing says you can't have your extra mags in your back pocket.

If Bob Vogel can win the IPSC World Production Shoot in Greece with a stock Glock 17 then anyone should be able if they have the talent. It is the archer not the arrow. Shooting a 9mm M&P at a match beats sitting at home holding a gun you can't afford to feed.

The Comp-Tac International holsters can be converted to belt style with the parts it is sold with, just remove the drop adapter - similar to the Blade Tech DOH system. The parts are basically interchangeable, yes I have used both. I'm not sure if the drop is really a big advantage and personally I don't like they way they cant the pistol inwards.
