I’m new to the handgun scene and am wondering…….do you have a holster for your handgun? I was at the range today and noticed a few guys walking around with holstered handguns. Seeing as the only place you can legally have a holstered handgun in this country is the range it never occurred to me that one would useful. With the tables and whatnot available at the range they really have no practical use…….it is simply all about the coolness factor? THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM IN ANY WAY OF PEOPLE THAT USE HOLSTERS: I AM JUST CURIOUS.

Most ranges allow drawing of a loaded pistol if the person holds a black badge certification which is a course offered by IPSC. Most of the black badge holders compete in competitions hence training with a holster. On outdoor ranges it is as well a lot safer to use a holster as tables are not always available and it keeps people from walking around waving their handguns they are instead holstered when not in use.

Lots of guys do IDPA, the range is one of the few places you can wear the gun, so it's good practice. It keeps it handy, never need to look around and ask, "Where did I put it down?" I imagine some might do it for the coolness factor, but so what? To say it doesn't have a practical purpose is not going to be a popular opinion around here, there's lots of things I don't understand, but I just leave them at that knowing that the person probably has their own reasons. Look at all the accessories folks put on their guns to personalize them, the holster is probably the most practical of them all.

I have NO problem and NO issue with holsters.....I might even get one. I asked because I am curious and this is the place to ask questions. Jeesh the intraweb can be a touchy place.

holster is one thing you will need if you ever want to take some kind of formal training. I am shopping for a holster right now as its time I took black badge course.

BTW - anybody knows best source for a good holster for 1911. And I heard not all holsters are "legal" for IPSC - so what is the difference and how do I know what should I buy? Thanx, much appreciated as usual.

A friendly word of advice, most ranges do not allow the use of a holster unless you have had formal training. There are several courses you can take to get qualified for holster carry. Best ask the people at your club, they will lead you in the right direction.

do you have a holster for your handgun?

I'm getting a free Uncle Mike's from a guy in the States. He accidently ordered a lefty holster and didn't want it. I am only interested in a holster for home use (with UNloaded gun) just to mess around with.

.... It's a hellva lot safer than simply putting it down on a bench/table etc. ! ( At Police qualifications , RCMP anyway, the pistol is ALWAYS holstered ! Magazine out ! ) ..... David K

No, dude, he's in BC - not the socialist centre of the universe :D Even the starchy club I shoot at waits 'til you've proven you're an ass before stopping you from doing something as safe as holstering a pistol.

I have at least 15 different holsters 3 just for my short SRH, I also shoot cowboy action so have a couple of holster rigs for that, then there are my holsters I have for my 1911 & Glock's.

My take on holsters is if you own a handgun you should have at least one quality holster for it then learn how to draw it proficiently.

I learnt how to draw properly by reading every article on this written by Ross Siegfried and taking a Black Badge course.

Then doing as Ross Siegfried wrote draw and dry fire for hours by starting out each practice session very slowly then gradually speeding up until you can draw and dry fire safely and quickly.

Then get out to the range and do the same with live ammo...

The safest and most secure place for a hand gun is in holster attached to your hip..

If you are at a range that is not too busy and your down range 25 yards away, are you in direct control of your firearm. And when someone else shows up and is looking at you gun and ammo while you are 25 yards away, it is a strange feeling. I like mine on my hip, with at least 1 mag on the belt. Hey, some ranges are a long way away from anywhere and you may be the only one there , until another car pulls in, with who knows what in it.
