Today I received a long looked for item to make my 41 Long Branch rifle happy- a hinged upper band. :)

So glad to find one of these! The thing looks brand new, nice clear LB marking. Thanks to Spinecracker! I wasn't as lucky as Stencollector, getting one of these off Granite for $5. :wave:

I had found a brand new CCM upper handguard a year ago with the cutaway for the hinge, so that's on the rifle already.

These are the pics I have for now(from a year or so ago from previous owner), pics of it on the rifle to follow.

The rifle is an FTR...everything was changed, original wood was sanded, but the rifle action itself is like new. Bit by bit I've found the right parts to make it as good as I can. Some people have perfect, unissued, factory fresh 41's but I haven't been that lucky.

I wonder what the gas trap op rod is worth? Possibly as much as the rifle?

Is that just a normal uncut oprod or something gas trap rifle specific?

Depends on condition and originality. It has the relief cut modification to the original configuration which would diminish the value considerably. Also, I don't know about demand in Canada. I'd be curious to know how many complete gas trap Garands there are in this country. Gas trap restorations can be hugely expensive and time consuming, and the show-stopper is always finding an original barrel and gas trap unit. Most of the early gas trap Garands were rebarreled and converted to the later gas port configuration while in military service. You do see early gas trap rifles from time to time, but they are invariably w/o the original barrel and gas trap unit, and are therefore more of a curiosity because of the early s/n.

Over the yrs I have found a few gas trap vintage parts on rifles incl a numbered rear sight base, follower and lower band. I don't try to flog these though and find a place for them when rebuilding rifles. I recall someone showing pics of an early gas trap rifle on this forum, but it had been modified and looked pretty beat.

Very nice. I have a nice 42 that I pieced together the same way.
Still waiting for a nice 41 to come along.

The ones relieved for the hinged band are pretty rare though... ;)

That being said, I'm not convinced that CCM front guard is original. The later ones are easily faked into the early ones with a milling machine. No matter. It looks the part well enough.

I bought a couple of relieved HGs like that new old stock a couple years back, same condition, I think they probably made a crap load that way, same as the low cut forends which are seen right into 1942 on rifles (especially NZ marked). I have a couple forends with the low cut and with 42 date serial #s. Same as the ribbed/non-ribbed rear HGs, they show up all years I have seen except the later CA stocked rifles.

BTW Cantom - I can use a 41 dated sling for mine if you come across one :)

I got it from Russ Wood Claven, he had/has a stash of NOS Enfield parts, I went right to his house to get it. Also had a bunch of Cooey M82 parts. This guard is brand new.
