So... in preparation of a new FF handguard I decided to remove my FSB today.

Holy crap on a stick!

The guide on AR15.com says a few taps should do it... and that LMT uses straight pins instead of taper pins.

I broke my 1/4" punch first...

Then I bent 2 1/4" drill bits...

Then I brought out a set punch... I mushroomed the hell out of the tip but finally managed to move the pins... slightly.

I had to put on hearing protection...

I went to a slightly larger punch and got the heavy hammer...

After about 10 more minutes of pounding I got the first pin out... the other one took another 20.

#### me... my hands hurt and I'm tempted to start my own jihad.

Don't joke... I'm worried to check.

I made sure the bbl was propped on both ends of the FSB and part of the FSB was also resting on a piece of wood.

I'm actually dreading putting the damn thing back on...

I've already cut off the bayonet lug and sling loop... just have to clean up the top and spray it with the BBQ paint.

I don't see how you could cut it down and paint it while still on the rifle...
 
I have found that to get stiff pins out I use a hollow tube held in a bench vise long enough so it wont move down when hit, but just sticking out a little from the top of the vise(if this makes sense). Now place the large side of the pin on the tube so that when you punch it out it will fall in the tube.now use the correct punch and bang away ,I find using a big hammer with good blows better then using a light hammer with many blows.(this is much easier with two poeple one holding the gun and one doing the hitting. for what it's worth hpoe this helps.
 
Did you tap them out in the same direction as your upper/lower take down pins ?? I actually ended up dreameling cut off my Bushmaster FSB (after drilling out the pins) but my Armalite came out with little sweet.

That would be impossible if they were actually tapered wouldn't it?

To satisfy your curiosity I'll measure the diam. of the pins tonight... I'd measure them now but the battery on my calipers is apparently dead.

;)

For the curious they were punched out according to AR15.com's guide.

You know... I must agree in retrospect that doing the work with the FSB attached would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.

I was having a "can't see the forest for the trees" moment and was so caught up on how to remove the FSB that I didn't even pause to think of the alternatives.

I'm off to crappy tire on the way home to pick myself up a wrench to remove the BBL nut... any tips before I spend 2 hours working on that?

I recomend you get yourself a proper barrel nut wrench. You will likely damage the nut and the barrel without a proper wrench. Wolverine has some in stock, and I think TSE would as well. Save your self the hassle. You have to put alot of force to move the barrel nut....if it slips off....well you can imagine what would happen with a jury rigged set up....use the right tool...

Dang... I was under the impression that I could use one of those strap wrenches to remove the bbl nut.

While I don't care about the BBL nut per say as its being replaced I'd hate to damage the BBL.

It looks like my parts are going to be delayed as no one is home to sign for them today... maybe I'll have to pick up a wrench.

Yeah... moly grease is on the list of things to get. I was hoping the strap would also get off the existing nut.

Yeah... I thought of that too.

Next time I'll do the work with the FSB right on the BBL.

From re-reading the handguard instructions I do need a BBL nut wrench... sonofa#####!

They looked the same to me when I was getting ready to pound them out...

Dropped a replacement battery in the calipers... 0.1245 at one end... 0.1245 at the other.

Same for both.

Oh... and I got the BBL nut off with a large pair of pliers. Barely marked it... not that I need it.
