hey guys,

Just wanted to reblue a model 94 I picked up. Is it possible to do at home on a low budget with the kits out there? also does anyone know how hard it is to take the barrel off the receiver of a model 94. Its a post 64 (1967 or so).

thanks
John

If you are talking about the $10 tube of paste, or the $15 bottle of bluing available locally, the answer is no. Cold bluing in these small quantities will not go on evenly, and are not very durable. They are very picky about the cleanliness of the metal (a fingerprint won't blue) and also vary picky about the varying hardness of the metal on machined or heat treated parts.

I use Brownell's oxpho-blue, in which I submerge the bead blasted gun parts. It is about the best cold blue you can get, but even it is not overly durable on a gun that is going to get used. It's OK for a wall hanger mind you.

The receiver of the post-64 94's will not blue. The steel used in the post-64 94's was of a composition that will not blue... so they were iron plated and that was blued at the factory level but when it wears a bit or rusts, it is so thin that there is nothing to blue. have the action nickle plated along with a few screws and barrel bands and it looks not bad...

A '94 barrel is about as easy to remove as any. You still need to be able to grip the barrel and receiver well enough to apply torque, without doing any harm. I agree with stencollector - Oxphoblue is as good as it gets for cold bluing, Brownells T-4 is also worth trying, but neither equals a proper hot blue. As guntech pointed out, some of the post '64 receivers don't reblue well. Originally they have a shiney black finish. If you try a touchup on a small hidden area you will be able to tell if you have one of these.

i picked up some gun blue at canadain tire, worked pretty decent( but im not a gun snob lol), but its take some practice to get it on even.i found to just soak a whole side of a sponge and let it sit on the barrel in one spot for a minute or so then move to the next spot.
