What are the steps to start our own home built projects?

I think I might undertake a project but don;t know if its worthwhile.

What I want to do is to design new furniture for a 10/22. More specifically I want to take a METAL body airsoft MP5 SD6 and MAKE a 10/22 fit in it.

This would be a one off for me only with a web tutorial for those interested in duplicating.

The receiver and barrel would "drop in". Would this not be a new stock and ok'd in a verification?

There are reporting requirements if certain aspects of a firearm are changed. Some changes are not permitted, particularly if they change the class of the firearm. To the best of my knowledge, restocking a firearm is not reportable. You are not making a receiver, or a new firearm. The receiver in this firearm will be a 10/22 receiver. The factory barrel cannot be cut to less than 18". The restocked firearm cannot be less than 26" in overall length when in firing condition. You cannot apply a bullpup stock, regardless of oal. Think about the plastic stock set that makes a 10/22 look like a little MG42. The rifle is still a 10/22.

good thinking - I am going to pick up an MP5 metal body off a friend soon. Then I need a 10/22 for the project.

Anyone have an Old one they can sell me?

Check the Minimum barrel length for non-restricted firearms. I believe the minimum length is 18.5" for the barrel.

As women say, that 1/2" makes a BIG difference!!!:p;):D

SKBY.

Is that comment relevant to the day after valentines day Skullboy? :D

I would keep every thing to factory length and maybe put a new fake can on it.

The goal is to do surgery only on the airsoft body. The big question is whether or not the plastic Body airsoft is the same dimension as the metal body, if so then I have some cheap kadavers to work on before I move to the $$$ metal one.

Fitting , bracing, free floating (the easy way out) . Also this project may come to a stop if the airsoft body is not as wide as the 22 receiver... I won;t be filling any gaps.

You cannot cut the barrel down past 18.5"

If it is not a semi automatic centerfire, which the 10/22 isn't you may put any length barrel you wish as long as it if factory and follows the 26" OAL rule.

You legally can make anything you want provided the legal criterea is met.

Using the airsoft body should be fine.

Cannot-cut limit for a semi auto rimfire centrefire is 18". For any manually operated longarm its 18". For semi auto centrefire its 18.5". 26" oal minimum applies to all.

I was going to do this too but got lazy and sold my 10/22 instead. I'd sudgest going with an MP5SD, the longer barrel won't look stupid with a fake silencer on it.

OA length on a 10/22 is 37.25 inches

The MP5 below is 32 inches OA, hmm that leaves at least 5 inches to cover up. That might start looking a little silly. BUT can the reciever be set back a bit and use some trigger linkage? (gray area - this may enter bullpup category depending on that criteria)

hmmm that shaves a few inches,

for ####s and giggles can someone measure the width of their 10/22 receiver for me?

I'll find out the body width of the MP5 Airsoft unit.

see if this is even doable width-wise.

Isn't the minimum over-all length for a non-restricted around 27 or something inches? Seems to me you're only issue here is finding some one to make you a barrel to the length you need. Krink barrel could work.

If someone had that gunmakers liscence.. they could create a 'factory' barrel for a rifle that satisfied the OAL.
