Check out sponsor Armacoat on here for all the diy tips and tricks. For the best finish, the piece should be parkerised first....really good insurance that the paint will adhere, be durable, and protect the metal.
I did an AR barrel with Armacoat 6 or 7 years ago....it was when Murdoc first opened up. I was fortunate that it was already parkd' and to this day it looks as fresh as when I did it. Main thing is to degrease and degrease again, wear dry nylon gloves, make sure you have proper ventilation.... Like not in your house as this stuff is pretty hard on brain cells.

For best results blast and parkerize first. Then paint something not too expensive until you get the hang of it. I did and redid a knife to start. Remember if you are using an airbrush the bigger the compressor you use the more water that will get into the paint. I recommend a small model paint compressor, they keep a more consistent PSI and have less water coming out of the tank from condensation. A model paint spray gun works well too.
I've done a few with armacoat. They turned out well and hasn't been any issues with the durability. I prepped by sandblasting and degreasing with brake kleen and laquer solvent then sprayed the coating. I thinned it a bit to go through my cheap spray gun with laquer thinner. The only problem I had was leaking packaging which was rectified (and the offer to replace was made, thanks Murdoc) long ago. FWIW I recommend it.
