I was just wondering if anyone had had any difficulties renewing their home insurance since all this negative publicity in the media about guns being stolen from legal owners, etc. Especially if you've got a rider on your policy to specifically cover your guns.

I remember here back in 1996, one of the first things that happened when the Govt. announced that handguns were going to be banned is that a lot of insurance companies stopped issuing policies to people who owned them. (But that was mainly because of the supposed danger from them, rather than the risk of theft.)

As I understand it, and granted I may be incorrect, if you just have insurance covering contents of household, and you get broken into and have your guns stolen, then the insurance company only needs to pay the value of the guns as according to their own value guide, which will likely be far less than what the items are actually worth.

Whereas is you individually list each firearm, and the replacement value (not what YOU paid for it, but how much it would cost for you to get another in the same shape), then the company has to pay you the replacement value in the case of an incident.

I was shocked to find out a few years ago that my insurance only covered a max of $1000.00 for firearms and accessories.(READ YOUR POLICY!!) I ended up going through a nightnmare of photos, appraisals etc to get a 'rider' on my policy that adequately protected me. It ended up being cost prohibitive, in my opinion, so I decided to self-insure and take care of the risk myself.

My insurance company states the same. I can buy additional coverage but, as you mentioned, details & an appraisal would have to be done.

Regards,

I'm insured with State Farm. Have the regular home insurance, but asked for extra coverage to include guns and reloading equipment. I don't think it cost anything extra, just as long as they know about it in advance. They recomended having photos somewhere fire safe just in case, and did not ask for an appraisal. My policy is also "Replacement Value", good to have.

I'd check with your insurance company and also in your policy about what "replacement value" of "home contents" means. I know here in the UK, insurance companies usually do not consider firearms to be covered by the term "home contents" because it's not something typically found in a home. If you've got a couple of air guns and shotguns you can get away with it, but anything more than that (or rifles or prohibited weapons) and you've got to get special coverage, i.e. a rider. If you list them separately, you'll get more for them but (a) harder to get coverage and (b) it costs a lot more.

The only company I know here that will insure guns individually is Zurich.

I like X-Ray am with State Farm and I specifically checked and was told that they were covered under the basic policy.

Most insurance policies have limits on the value of specific types of items (Say $3000 for sporting goods.) and if you want to have coverage over that then you need to get specific riders.

The riders used to be reasonably priced, but lately they've gotten outrageous. Like 1/3 the replacement cost every year... At that rate its not worth it.
