Wondering if anyone out there has a good recipe for made-at-home lapping compound for shotgun barrels? I've got a very lightly frosted shotgun barrel that could use some cleanup to be a nice mirror finish bore.

So far I'm thinking a lead slug cast onto a brass brush smeared with comet and a little oil might be a good option, but figured I'd ask and see what other ingenous ideas CGN has.

Sadly far away from any major store excepting a small home hardware and possibly a napa. I can probably get them to order valve lapping compound but I have spare time this week so figured I'd see if there were home alternatives.

If you have to order anyways try using the clover products I think a silicone carbide grease mix of about 280 grit is what you are after.

280 grit lapping compound to polish a shotgun barrel? Trust me this would lead to disaster!
I would use nothing coarser than 600 grit if the "frosting" is bad and 800 to 1000 grit if only polishing is required.
For real smooth laping if you are patient enough then J-B bore paste is recomended.

If you can't find anything else, I'd think a car buffing compound (before waxing) might be of some use - mild abrasive, but no idea how it'd compare to J-B

I don't know what would cause 'very lightly frosted bore'... is it plastic fouling from the wad? That cleans out easily with 0000 steel wool on a brush.

If it is actually pitted it will required 'polishing' with something that actually will remove metal. JB Bore paste will not do that.
