A while back I read that someone was going to try a homemade foul-out elecrolytic gun cleaning system. has anyone done this and if so how did it work ?

I've found some info on this and an anxious to try it.

Agent Mango mentioned a while back that this is something best left to those with the electical engeneering or chemical degree. Done wrong, you can erode the bore.

The basics of the system is an electrolytic process. The gizmo i read about uses a plain 1.5V battery as a DC source. The neg goes to a steel rod ( Tig welding rods are suggested) in the bore that has been isolated with o-rings. and the positive to the gun.

The barrel is filled with a solution of vinegar 3% ammonia and distilled water.

In theory the copper should plate the steel rod and be removed from the bore. This is followed by a good cleaning and oiling to prevent rust.

I was wondering if this would harm the barrel ? if this system works it beats the hell out of spending $120 for a foul-out system plus solutions

I made one with directions that were on a site by "Colin in Ottawa", not sure if he's still on the board.

I used a steel sectioned cleaning rod with some shrink tubing along the joints to help in keeping the rod from touching the barrel and a rubber stopper on the end to seal the chamber ( if it's a semi, don't forget to plug the gas vent with a toothpick or something).

One electrical lead goes to the batteries (I forget which one + or - and I'm not going to dig it out right now) the other goes from the batteries ( 2 D cells) to the barrel/reciever.

You could use the Outers solution, but I just used ammonia. It did remove copper from the bore and placed it on the "electrode" as the Outers system does, and there was no damage to the bore (I olied the crap out of it once I swabbed it clean). I didn't try the Outers lead out solution but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

YMMV

Yup...simple as pie. I use a 12V battery charger for current.

HERES the risk:" Connected the right way, the fouling transfers from the barrel to the rod. Connected the wrong way, the opposite happens (you deposit your anode onto the walls of your barrel)

LOL...I cant remember which gets a positive charge (the gun or the rod)..I guesss I'll have to go look unless someone else knows.

The previously posted site (www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm) has some great advice for ensuring your voltage and current (amperage) are kept low when using homemade electronic bore cleaners. 1.5 to 3.0v max, and no more than 200 mA. The Outers FoulOut III only uses .3 volts and draws low current. You're inviting trouble if you use the commercial Foul Out electolyte solution in a homemade unit using higher voltage/current. The commecial electrolytes (CopOut and LeadOut) contain either copper or lead in solution, and when used with 1.5 or 3.0v homade units can could cause barrel ethching/erosion. Stick with the water/vinegar/houshold ammonia mix and you'll be fine.
